What's normal eGFR

Please help, I'm worried about a recent eGFR blood test! It came back as 86, when everything online says it should be>90.

Has anyone had a level like this and been diagnosed with kidney disease? My GP didn't seem worried and said will will retest in 6 months but I'm worried!

I know the calculations can take height, weight and ethnicity into account but not sure mine did. Any doctors out there? I'm 40, height 156cm, weight 50kg and of South Asian origin. No symptoms.

Sorry but I have HA and I can't seem to calm my mind...

Hello,

I've had this recently. Mine was around 75 I think. I asked my GP about it, and he said without any other kidney issues, it's not a problem. Apparently the levels were adjusted a while ago, and used to be a wider (including down to 60 I think) as normal.

Definitely get retested if the doctor is offering, and it's worrying you. Do you have any other symptoms?

on its own a single reading is not useful at all - it needs interpreting in the context of the rest of the results, the trend in numbers and your medical history (including why they checked it in the first place). Sounds like the GP, who has access to all the info, isn’t worried but is being sensible by monitoring it.

It's absolutely fine. I do kidney function tests in numerous patients and many of them are not >90. As pp says it's just a snapshot based on creatinine level and age/sex. If creatinine within normal limits (and with that eGFR it will be) I wouldn't be worried at all.

@sproutsandparsnips thank you for your post, that is so helpful. My creatinine, sodium, potassium and urea were all normal, as was my protein urine dipstick test. But the National Kidney Foundation website really worried me, saying something about my level being stage 2?!

So people do have eGFR levels less than 90 and that's not uncommon (in the healthy)?

Absolutely they do.
I'm sure if I had mine checked there is a good chance it would be less than 90.
If you checked it again tomorrow it might be >90 then different again the next day.
Honestly I wouldn't bat an eyelid at an eGFR of 86.

Where I worked they reported eGFR as > 60 which was normal or would report the number if 59 or less. So we never saw anything between 60 and 90.
