How can I tell if my contact lens is in?

My lenses are very light prescription. I really only need them for my hobby (skiing) but I wear them regularly so my eyes stay used to them.

Tonight I just couldn't get the right hand one out.

I thought it had dried and got stuck and tried irrigation & massaging the lid, but no change after several attempts over the evening.

I was sure it was in because I can feel a defined curved edge around my pupil, I just can't pinch anything out.

Then I got curious and felt the left eye that I definitely took the lens out of and it has the same curved edge so now I have no idea at all. Either the right lens is not in and the line I can feel is part of my eye (which is really weird, it feels like the edge of something artificial) or I've somehow had a second lens left in my left eye god knows how long and just been putting a lens on top of it, which also seems unlikely.

I've looked with a torch and I don't see the edge of a lens in the right eye.

I'm a bit panicky but I think all I can do is sleep, see how it is tomorrow and find an optician to check it.

Is there anything else I can do? Does anyone know a way to see for certain if the lens is there? Do eyes have a ridge round the pupil?

Are you worried it’s got stuck? It can’t disappear completely, if it is up under your eyelid it will work it’s way out eventually. Try pulling your upper lid down over your lower, hold for a second then release, this sometimes works for me.

Do you have a set of glasses? If you put them on then your vision would be different if you have your lens in as well. I have been known to put 2 lenses in on top of each other and wonder why the hell I can’t see out of one eye and can’t find the missing lens!

Good suggestion about putting glasses on. From previous experience (albeit decades ago!) falling asleep with them in, you'll know well enough in the morning as it will feel dry. In which case just use lots of drops or saline solution to moisten again and fish it out. It won't be too awful. I'm sure it happens a lot.
