Is this something to show the doctor, or just normal aging?

I'm developing odd patches on my forearms and the backs of my hands, where the skin doesn't seem to behave like the rest of my skin. The photo with black arrows shows my arm resting straight on the table, whereas the photo with the blue arrows shows my arm with my hand flexed backwards so that my skin wrinkles. You can see that the patches do not wrinkle.

What are they? Do I need to show them to the doctor? I spent a lot of my youth in hot, sunny countries. Or are they merely a normal aspect of my body becoming more decrepit as I approach 60?

It's hard to see but aren't they sun spots from sun damage?

There’s only one photo?

Here's the second image

Some sun damage is just a harmless change. But with some sun damage is the change is cancerous.

I showed these to my dermatologist, no cause for concern. Normal sun induced age deterioration.

I think my arms look a bit like that, and I'm a similar age. It's just life. I certainly wouldn't see a doctor.... they'd probably laugh me out of the consulting room!

Yeah, another odd thing you get as you get older. Wait till you get the lovely moley spots in all sorts of places, they're not fun, either. 😏

I see a dermatologist every January for a different, chronic skin condition. These have appeared since my last consultation.

I have those too, you look like you've got the same type of skin as me, sun damage but not the worrying kind.

Dilbertian · 12/05/2024 19:19

Yes, I'm also getting the moles, cherry haemangiomas and bulging blue-black haemangiomas. Lovely. (Not.) And freckles. I never used to have freckles.

If in doubt, always see a doctor. Don't worry about time-wasting. You are not supposed to know if it's something serious or not - you are a layperson. Let them decide.
Also, you know your own body, and if you feel that it is doing something unusual compared to the past, that is a good reason to consult a specialist.
Better to be 'laughed out of the waiting room' than to miss something significant.
