Retinal migraine - anyone had one?

I’m used to having typical migraines. Blurry vision starts in one eye which eventually moves across to the other eye. This will last around half an hour, my vision will be back to normal but I’ll be left with a sore head.

This morning my right eye started going blurry which was strange as it’s usually my left that starts first. It was also a different kind of blur and only stayed in that one eye. I went to lie down as I usually do. Within 15/20 minutes the blurryness has completely gone. I’m left with a sore head but this is totally different for me. After doing a quick google it looks to be a retinal migraine, does anyone have any experiences of these? If so, do you have them along side normal migraines too?

Yes, I normally get the traditional kind of migraine but have had two painless retinal migraines in the last year as well. I found them slightly unnerving but was very pleased not to get the pain! Apparently they are common and nothing to worry about. I'm glad I wasn't driving though.

Yes I get both normal migraines and retinal migraines, more often retinal migraines without the headache, which doesn't make them any less difficult to deal with as I get a very tired, sicky hungover feeling with them and also my speech is often affected. I take sumitripan and painkillers for both types.

I've had about 5 optical migraines over the years and they're always the textbook glistening/sparkling shard of glass shaped break in my vision, I then lose peripheral vision and have to lie down with my eyes closed (can still see the sparkling shape) until it fades just as quickly as it came. Always feel washed out and sicky for a while after

Weirdly, I've had these retinal migraines for years. They only ever affect one eye and there's no pain or sickness with them. The whole episode is usually over in 20 mins max.

I have had many optical migraines, but only recall one “normal” migraine. Both stress-induced although I can’t always pinpoint the cause of optical migraine.

i have the glass zig-zag across my vision and can’t do anything - not enough vision left and feel odd. After about 45 minutes it recedes and I’m back to normal.

Thanks everyone. Feeling better after reading your messages.

I do feel quick sicky which I normally do with a migraine however the pain in my head is nowhere near as sore as it usually is which is a bonus!
