How long have you been taking Propranolol?

If you take propranolol for anxiety, how many months/years have you been taking it for, and how much a day? I've been taking 2 or 3 tablets a week for about 10 years. I'm so worried my doctor will say I have been on them too long and can't have anymore.

I’m same as you 2/3 (sometimes 4) 40mg for about 10 years. I have spoken with my doctor about keeping them as I need them to function so they have written that on my notes and work all other meds around them. I take them for anxiety and also for a tremor

I took them for half a year then weaned to as hoc use (often preemptive but not always.)

I stopped entirely when I became pregnant.

When I stopped breastfeeding I got a prescription again and have repeated it though usually it expires before I've used many or any.

I went into it with a plan to be off them as son as possible and was more interested in holistic solutions but wasn't physically capable without them. They were a total game changer but I also tried lots of therapy. 3 months of 121 CBT really helped. I also reorganised my life and changed career to support my rehabilitation too. It was a
Wholesale change but worth it.

Obviously no need to stop if you're happy but that's my story.

Thank you for your response. I also feel I need them to function at work some days. I'm worried that if I tell my doctor this, they may think I am addicted or reliant on them.

I'm not a doc, but I don't think propranolol is addictive in the same way as the benzodiapene tranquilisers (valium, etc.). I wouldn't have thought there was a time limit.

I'm surprised they have let you take them that long for anxiety. DH has only ever been allowed a couple of weeks at a time until the anti anxiety medication starts to work. Propranolol isn't an anti anxiety medication and it is normally just used short term when you are very anxious. I was under the impression that for anxiety it's effectiveness can wear off over time as well.

Oh, interesting. I was only aware of it as a heart medicine; not familiar with its use for anxiety.

You can't become addicted to them.

Do you actually understand what you've been taking for 10 years?

Tinkerbellflowers · 09/05/2024 16:13

Sorry - addicted is the wrong word. I meant reliant. I don't think I could go to work without them. I feel so nervous about everything, and they stop my heart racing.

DP takes one every morning and evening and gets very panicky and anxious if he's missed once, can really notice a difference in him then he realizes he's forgotten to take one

Can I ask how long he has been on them please?
