What is the black smelly stuff farmers spray on their fields

So I have just been walking my dog on the fields where we live and whilst on the fields a farmer was spreading a black smelly sticky type of manure? The field isn't used for crops it's just overgrown grass from what I can gather? Does anyone know what this substance is?

This is the way to use up masses of animal waste product and fertilise the fields without expensive artificial fertiliser.
Surely there is capacity to deal with it safely in enclosed spaces, as with any other of the many noxious chemicals in use today?

(and I live in the countryside, with dogs.)

bluecomputerscreen · 08/05/2024 14:03

it's natural fertiliser. either slurry or waste from an anerobic digestor.

it's unlikely to cause harm to you and your dog, though could contain bugs like e-coli that could make you ill if you ingest it.
the smell is unpleasant but not harmful.

as a responsible dog owner you have your dog on a lead by your side anyway so the dog should not be able to eat/lick any.

When I went to vote last week, the air was heavy with the stench of bull shit, which I thought was appropriate, even though it was only actually the slurry spread in the next door field.

TheMonstrosity · 08/05/2024 14:19

It also contains animal blood

TheMonstrosity · 08/05/2024 14:22

when I was a kid, in the 70s, when we used to drive past the fields my dad would wind the car window down, and say " get a lungful of that, its good for you" 😁

My cousin fell into the slurry pit once when we were kids. Thankfully he was fine but it caused a fair amount of panic.

My brother fell in the slurry pit when he was a small boy. Luckily it was pretty empty so he didn't drown, was just covered in shit. According to my Mum it was everywhere, even in his ears.

Walking on fields where it has been spread will do you no harm, it's not been near an animal for weeks so will not have a high bacterial load. And much better for the environment than artificial fertilisers.

blobby10 · 08/05/2024 14:23

You would know if its human waste - lots of farmers round here used it in the 80/90s as they were paid to take it away from the treatment centre. One farmer in particular delighted in driving the tanks through the suburban streets leaving the stench behind him before spreading it on his fields which were right next to a country pub that served food ---outside in the summer!. I think its more controlled nowadays but I don't know.

I used to live in Wales and it always smelt of cow poo and I was told by aunties and uncles it's good for your lungs! I don't actually mind the smell of cow poo now but the smell today of this black stuff, it's stuck in my nose

If it's being/has been spread in the open air it won't do you any harm though it stinks 😩 no one has their washing out round here when they're spreading 🤣.

Apart from the obvious of eating it 🤮 which probably isn't the best thing your dog can eat, it's an absolute bugger to get off them when they roll in it and the smell lingers. Mine seem to think it's the most alluring perfume ever. It's really not 🤣.

justasking111 · 08/05/2024 14:39

Around here farmers empty septic tanks, that gets used

MrsMoastyToasty · 08/05/2024 14:41

When I worked in the water industry we sold a product called Biogran. Literally dried waste from sewage treatment works sold as fertiliser.

eileandubh · 08/05/2024 14:43

Round here, the fields have been too sodden to get any muck spread until now so the farmers are busily trying to use up the backlog. It's going everywhere.

They're not supposed to!

My cat fell in the slurry pit. God only knows how she got herself out without being overcome by the fumes. We put her straight in the sink and drowned her with water and dog shampoo. And she didn't put up a fight. She just stood there looking horribly ashamed and very sorry for herself. And she still stank afterwards. Every time I see a Mog book, I think of her. She was always getting into stupid situations that cat.

The vision of your@GoFaster83 cat ashamed in the bath made me laugh out loud🤣 used to love the Mog books when mine were little! Glad she lived to tell the tale😺

You always know when the farmers have been out 'muck spreading'🤢!

That's what we always called it.
The smell sticks with the farmers even after showering and fresh clothes My friends and I hated when they used to come ask to dance on a Friday night at muck spreading time. Rest of the year no problem.

BangBig · 08/05/2024 16:37

Even if it were human waste it would’ve been through a heat process so wouldn’t be harmful to you. Why do you think human waste would be harmful but other animal waste not?

muddyford · 08/05/2024 16:53

My friend, whose accent makes the late Queen sound common, calls it shit hurling. As she owns half the county, she knows these things!

Because of legal and illegal drugs they may use, contraceptives, all kinds of things really that animals don't consume

Septic tank contents spread here as well.

Mmmmmm

Animals are given all sorts.

Blackcats7 · 08/05/2024 18:40

It’s called dung spurtin here

justasking111 · 08/05/2024 20:07

The odour when they spray the fields Sheesh. We all pray for rain.

Tophelleborine · 08/05/2024 20:13

There's a farm next to us uses human shit, only once a year but it's a bad week 🤑

TheSproutOfWrath · 08/05/2024 20:29

I stupidly left my washing out today and came home to it reeking. I live on a farm so should know better!
I particularly hate later in the year when it's the fishy smelling one 🤢

justasking111 · 08/05/2024 22:43

I hate it when ours has huge bonfires and throws tyres on them. Especially when I have washing on the line.
