Itchy legs when walking in the wet?!

I am posting for a friend who's upset I'm not taking her seriously.

She reports getting itchy feet and lower legs when walking on a wet surface. It doesn't matter what shoes/socks/trousers are worn, and the itchiness disappears after a few minutes of standing still. No rash or anything to see and it doesn't happen in the shower. It has to be a wet outside surface, and the itchiness is worse if the surface is dirty.

She's as mad as a box of frogs, right?!

Rain can release a type of bacteria when it hits the ground. I think that weird smell is something to do with it so maybe it's that, the bacteria, as my partners eczema flares when it's rainy. Just a guess op.

That's a thought. This is an instant reaction though and the itchiness stops if she stands still for a few minutes.

Does it happen if she doesn't know the floor was wet?

I asked her and she said she always knows jd the floor is wet....? We're talking something like a rainy pavement (and worse if the pavement is dirty). Apparently it's ok in the shower because she's standing still...

I get this, when the ground is wet but usually only in the countryside, doesn’t really happen in urban areas. I also get it sometimes when the air is humid even if it doesn’t actually rain.

Exactly the same? Sudden onset itching that resolves by standing still for a few minutes? I thought it was odd enough with one person...!

I think so, sudden onset itching with no obvious other external factors. It goes away after a few minutes when I sit down, not sure if standing still would also cause it to go away but I’m not really one for standing still for long so never noticed! I’ll admit I’ve never really thought of it as being odd and just assumed it happened to others too.

I get a similar itching if I get cold when I'm out walking. Could she try and take an antihistamine such as Benadryl and see if it makes a difference? I don't have the same reaction if I take an antihistamine.

MyCousinDaphne · 06/05/2024 22:21

I get this when walking in the cold on my thighs and lower legs. It is really horrible. When I was a child, I used to get unbearable itching in my feet and lower legs when I brushed my hair. No one believed me.

Fr7fr6 · 06/05/2024 22:21

I meant to add that it is urticaria, and many people react to different triggers. For me it's cold and vibration (think riding a mountain bike quickly on a gravel track).

I get very itchy ankles every time I do the washing up, genuinely.

Is it urticaria if there is nothing to see? No visible rash or anything?

This is astonishing. Genuinely blown away by how many people experience similar. How on earth do you all manage getting around and exercising when we're in the UK and it's wet 90% of the time?!

I love the poster with itchy legs when washing up! I can see that would be a hard sell....!
