Fibromyalgia suffers - does anyone have a weird swallowing thing?

Back in January and then again for the last week, I have had a weird swallowing thing. It cleared up of its own accord the first time rounf. It has coincided with a flare up of my other symptoms.

I feel like there is a ball of mucus in my throat and feel as though I am swallowing alot to try to shift it but it does not shift. I try to cough it up (TMI sorry) but nothing. I also have a very light pressue in the bottom of my throat - roughly where my neck meets my collar bone.

In addition, I feel the need to burp.

I went to the doctors today and she suggested it could be a post nasal drip or acid reflux or both. She said the pressure feeling could accompany either. She suggest inhaling menthol crystals dissolved in water and taking gaviscon regularly.

If it gets worse or if I have a problems with food, to return. If it stays longer than two weeks to return.

She tried to sure me about sinister stuff....

Hi popsy - sorry you're having troubles. Just wanted to say hello really as I've not seen you around much

shoshe · 02/04/2008 20:58

Hi babe yep I get it the dr gave me some Lansoprazole tablets which are gastro resistant tablets. Might be worth asking about them

How are you doing anyway?

trockodile · 02/04/2008 21:08

I get this sometimes and put it down to my underactive thyroid-i think it is enlarged sometimes if it is not working properly(thyroxine levels too low). I feel sick and have trouble swallowing. It might last a week or 2 and then clear up and i feel also less tired. May be worth checking?

trockodile · 02/04/2008 21:11

It may not be my thyroid btw as I also have PCOS and often think I have fybromyalgia symptoms but cannot face asking the dr for any more diagnoses![fed-up of drs appt emoticon!]

shoshe · 02/04/2008 21:13

trockodile I had PCOS, so might be worth having it looked at.

popsycal · 02/04/2008 21:32

had thyroid tested 3 times in 6 months! It is fine!

I am ok. 15 weeks pregnant which is complicating matters! I have done a bit of googling and see that 'the weird swallowing thing' is a fairly common symptom.
I am now trying to find a consultant in my area with an interest in fibromyalgia as I am getting very fed up of new symptoms constantly appearing. Worrying about new baby and the possible effect.....

hi just thought i would join this conversation, i have had fibromyalgia for years and the swallowing is all part of it. when i have a bad flare up i find i have to remember to swallow and think about it as it is as if my throat muscles dont work properly. if anyone else suffers from fibro. and has any useful tips on how to cope when things get bad i would appreciate it sooooooo much

popsycal · 04/04/2008 07:20

hippychick - that is exactly it - I have t consciously swallow!
Recently I have been having lots of 'back to front lie ins' - makes it sound more positive than 'early nights' - which makes me feel like a naughty small child!!
I am sure that sleeping when I can rather than resenting going to bed early has helped keep the symptoms at bay for a few months.

popsycal - the swallowing thing is not nice, do you find that you slur your words slightly when you are having a flare up. i have this regular and i get strange looks. i do tend to go to bed early but i have broken sleep all night so i try to rest in the day. are you taking any medication for this? i am just on dioflex which is a pain killer, but it doesnt do much at all. just interested to know what if anything you take and if you feel any better with it.

moondog · 04/04/2008 07:36

Have yuo lot asked for a referral to a speech and language therapist?
Many specialise in swallowing issues (area know as dysphagia). I don't myself (although am a SALT) but it might be an option?

hippychick1971 · 05/04/2008 16:52

moondog, we dont need speach therapy with fibro your muscles go very weak, hence the difficulty swallowing. this only happens when you are having a bad flare up, most of the time this problem isnt there. but thanks anyway

saltire · 05/04/2008 17:02

I sometimes get this, but more often than not it's acid reflux I get. I only ever get it though during a flare up, so if I'm not in pain - which I admit is rarely, then I don't get reflux or swallowing problems.

You definately need a referral to a rheumatologist, and ask to go to the pain clinic.
Apart from that how are you keeping?
