Angular chellitis (cracked corner of mouth)

Help!

Right corner of mouth been cracked for 2 months. Heals overnight and opens right back up when I wake up and talk/eat/yawn whatever.
so painful and scarring too :/

Used to get it every autumn but then didn’t for a few years and it came back with a bang this feb/March.

I concluded I was very stressed and run down with lots of international travel/worry - and made special attempts to remember daily multi vitamins. Vaseline etc. but nope - still there.
started taking Berocca yesterday in case b vitamins need a boost.

Diet largely home cooked but definitely lacking in fruit and veg. Could be that?

or is it fungal and needs something like canesten?

will see pharmacist on Tuesday but wondered if anyone has any tips or ideas ?

I use canestan if it occurs to treat it. I usually get in when I've been working/sleeping in hot then cold then hot then aircon office/hotel environments in winter. I try to prevent it by using vast amounts of Nivea blue lip balm stick. I also take multivitamins. Horrible thing to have.

I always take VitB supplements if I develop this and try to remember to take iron too.

I hope it heals soon OP and you find a solution.

Bruciebogtrotter · 05/05/2024 16:48

Low iron. However vitamin D, B12 and iron are all related - can’t remember exactly how but deficiency in one causes the others so get them all checked.

All very useful thank you.

I’ve got some daktacort which I’ve started applying.

Am consciously increasing fruit and vegetables from today and increasing water too.

multivitamins + high strength Vit D (which are often forgotten and left on the side) are also hopefully going to be forgotten less

I get this when my iron levels are very, very low

DesparatePragmatist · 05/05/2024 19:27

You mention right side only? Which side do you hold your toothbrush? Mention because I had this, right side, for years and years, and eventually tracked it down to a toothpaste reaction. Most common causes of toothpaste dermatitis are SLS and flavourings, especially the cinnamon flavouring. Its really hard to avoid but ice found the i-White range and Arm & Hammer baking soda toothpaste don't set me off. Good luck OP!

If it's a regular problem I would see the GP. Vitamin deficiencies/supplements are not to be messed with and you may need tests to establish what is needed.

KillingMeDeftIy · 06/05/2024 10:31

I’ve had this a couple of times and the only thing that works for it is Canestan. Don’t even bother trying anything else as lip balms etc did nothing. Canestan is not glamorous but it cleared it up in just a couple of days!

froidIci · 06/05/2024 15:44

Been using daktacort (as we had it at home) since yesterday and there’s been a dramatic improvement to the extent that it’s almost not there.

Have seriously also started looking at diet and water, and feeling better after a day of eating better already which is possibly psychological! But still :)

@froidIci It won’t be, water makes a big difference very quickly, the rest will take a little longer. Keep it up!

weleda calendula toothpaste healed mine! Sounds bizarre but try it. Haven’t had a flare up in years now and used to get it 3-4 times a year.
