I’ve looked at reviews which all have and are good so how do you know which to choose? Is there a place that show death stats etc?

I need the bits of disc squishy stuff moved off my nerves and spinal cord. NHS won’t do it.

Not good but yet I’m brushed off by nhs.

I'd see Mr Rai as a starting point and see what his thoughts are, and then try and get a detailed quote of how much it will cost. If he isn't the right man for the job he should know who is. Things like pre op scans and blood tests cost and you’ll be surprised how much it adds up. My husband wasn't best pleased to come out of the hospital with drugs to last a week and they were £200, he wasn't even asked if he needed that many, they also charged £7.50 for the flight socks to go home with, these weren't covered by the insurance. If you really need it done and it’s having a huge impact on your life the cost is worth it, but it might cost alot more than you were expecting. From my husbands point of view Mr Molloy was fantastic.

I don’t want to lose my house because I can’t pay the mortgage over this but I also can’t stay feeling like I’m on a knife edge.

OP posts:
Allofaflutter · 04/05/2024 16:21

On the spire website it quoted £12k basically for the operation. So extras on top too? So I need £12500?

The person you’re talking about possibly seeing no longer practices in the NHS @Allofaflutter. There may be reason for that. All the other private spinal surgeons in Norfolk do. I can’t say more, but caution would be advised.

Allofaflutter · 04/05/2024 17:00

Thank you for that. That’s a good point.

Allofaflutter · 04/05/2024 17:01

Is that a nod because you know?

OP posts:
Allofaflutter · 04/05/2024 17:01

ok back to the list.

Can you recommend one of the others? Thanks so much.

I love Mumsnet for this kind of thing 😊

Why won't the NHS do this for you, do you know what surgery you need. What about aftercare, would you need a high dependency bed which the Spire may not have. Have you seen the NHS spinal surgeon yet after you went to sdec. I would look at spinal specialists who specialise in cauda equina and travel if I needed to.

Allofaflutter · 04/05/2024 17:26

The surgeon was the on call one and I’m high risk because I had double extensive massive pulmonary embolisms in Jan, and I’m very fat with sleep apnea. I think he just gaslighted me because he didn’t want to do it. He told me I would be put on the spinal clinic urgently. Heard nothing at all.

I’m on blood thinners.

Just make sure that the hospital you choose has intensive care facilities. DH went into a local Winfield for an inguinal hernia repair and had a totally unexpected cardiac episode under anaesthesia and had to be collected from theatre there by a paramedic crew and taken to the county NHS hospital. It was absolutely terrifying at the time, and when he was referred to a cardiologist was told specifically to go via the NHS for this surgery even though it would be longer for this very reason. He ended up going to the next county to a specialist cardiac centre thank god, even though he had an unbearable 18 month wait thanks to Covid. With your spine, I wouldn't take any chances that they haven't got the onsite support to manage complications - an awful lot of private hospitals don't.

ChristmasPuddingAllRound · 04/05/2024 17:30

I can recommend Mr Rai. Had surgery 2years ago and he told me why he no longer works for NHS. PM me if you want. I was brushed off by the NandN and am so pleased I went via Spire.
Would say the surgery coat doesn't include pre op appointment and tests

sulkingsock · 04/05/2024 17:32

You need to go to a different a&e and get your GP on side. Your mri report is clear and you should have already been operated on. Did you see a consultant or just a registrar.

Allofaflutter · 04/05/2024 17:35

im menopausal with wee urgency issues already and although before I always knew I needed to go but just couldn’t always get there quick enough. And weed quite frequently it was a joke, oh mums in the loo again. Now I just don’t feel it much until I’m really full and it I get a pain in my lower abdomen in the front. Then I have to push to get it going. Dr said oh well you had wee problems before and this is all within the same and nothing to worry about it’s the menopause. It’s definitely not. It’s a change. I also can’t fully poo, it gets stuck and I’m trying to get it out by coughing and pushing. He said as I can clench it’s ok. He said as I have reduced feeling in my leg and bum but can feel some it’s ok. That’s not what all the websites say. They say red flags. Get surgery within 48hrs for best outcome. It’s 3 weeks now. MRI he said didn’t actually show caudia equina nerve compressed it had a few mm but that’s not what the report says. I just feel medically gaslighted.

Spire is literally a half mile from Norfolk and Norwich hospital so surely they would just take me over?

It was at almost midnight. So I’m thinking not a higher up.

This is my second A&E. jph wouldn’t even mri me and sent me home while I couldn’t stop screaming.

It was GP that sent urgent mri request hence why I can see my results on the nhs app.

Just to add I met Mr Rai and was operated on within the week. Once you've gone down that route it happens quickly. nHS was a years wait for the surgery
