Hygienist Appointment

I had a hygienist appointment a few days ago as I have gum disease.

I've never had such a painful hygienist session. I almost threw up. There was loads of blood. My bottom teeth are still sore and I've been told to use tee pee brushes twice a day without giving my teeth time to settle down.

Does this seem right? Anyone else got gum disease and had a different experience? Ta

I'm afraid so but if you put the work in now, using those tepe brushes diligently and brushing, the next one will be a lot better.

The gums were bleeding because they were inflamed and it sounds like there was a lot of nasty build-up in the pockets which needed removal. Otherwise it harbours the plaque.

To be fair if it's that painful you should be given some local anaesthetic , did you let the hygienist know it was that sore?

Thanks for the reply. My teeth/gums are more sore today than when I was at the dentist. I'll try and use the tee pee brushes tomorrow

If you leave it until tomorrow you’ll have even more bacterial build up! If those bacteria get back down those treated pockets, the treatment will have been pointless.

Right then, tee pee brush time Grin

Yes if you get some ordinary sensodyne toothpaste and rub it into all the teeth at the unlike couple times a day for a week it should help a bit.
This is what my dentist says

Thanks all for the suggestions

Last time had a through deep clean out into the pockets I had two visits. One side of mouth at a time with a LA each time (hygienist, said they wouldn't do full mouth in one visit as I could swallow my tongue if full mouth numb😱). Jaw was really aching after each one as it took ages, but don't remember gums being any more than just a bit tender.

It's painful and uncomfortable yes. Due to decay in certain areas I feel like I could pass out when she reaches those bits. I go every six months but each time isn't as bad as the last. Lots of bleeding. I keep thinking I might take some pain relief before I go.

Teepee brushes have made a big difference to my gums. 6 months ago I was told that my gums were bad and that I was at risk of further gum recession (I already had a bit). At my most recent appointment there was hardly any bleeding and everything was very clean and healthy.

I use them twice a day and use long a long handled teepee to get to my back teeth.

CJCreggsGoldfish · 03/05/2024 18:54

Oh…it was also a bit embarrassing as the hygienist pretty much taught me how to brush my teeth (I had no idea I was doing it wrong) but they encouraged me to brush lower at a slight angle. Hold the electric toothbrush on each tooth for 2seconds front and then back. Get one with a pressure sensor on it too so you’re not brushing too hard.

BandwagonsFull · 03/05/2024 19:01

Don't be embarrassed @CJCreggsGoldfish ! Hygienist here 👋🏼 and showing people how to brush effectively is literally our job 😊

I have had local anaesthetic when I have mine done, one side at a time, it makes it a lot easier

RobinHumphries · 04/05/2024 08:39

You can’t swallow your tongue, it’s impossible. It’s attached near the front hence tongue ties.

weekendfuntimes · 04/05/2024 17:53

I've been busy with the teepee brushes and my teeth are less sore now Grin
