I was stuck in bed from Saturday morning with bad case of flu until Monday (transfered to the couch). Since Sunday I have been getting really bad pain in the whole left side of my head, more so in my ear and my throat every time I swallow. Since then it's got so much more more painful that I am now taking perscribed co coldomol, which is now not really working that well. I went to Gp's yesterday who said my glands were swollon on the left side and gave me 1 daily dose of soluble Asprin 300 mg, to take. I am really struggling with eating and drinking. When I drink and I swallow it feels as though someone is sticking a knife in my ear and throat.

I am going back to Gps tomorrow if it hasn't improved any. Please has anyone else had this or simular and if so please say how long it lasted for. Thanks

My dad had similar symptoms and was diagnosed with mumps yesteday!

poor you - know that feeling exactly and for me, it was tonsillitis. When I took painkillers the pain in the ear would fade but the throat continue - eee it were murder. Given antibiotics by doc and it would go in a week.

Sounds like you might have tonsillitis. Poor you. Suggest regular paracetamol - soluble might be easier. Also, gargling with soluble aspirin 300mg 4 times daily can be good. It's usually viral and will go on it's own but if not getting better or you find you can't open your mouth properly need to go back to the doctor as you might need antibiotics. I have had problems with tonsilitis since a teenager. Soup and ice cream are good especially as the ice cream cools your throat

Emma can woman get mumps? Your poor dad this is nasty.

Scatter thats how this feels my ear and head stop hurting slightly but the pain from swollowing is still there its the struggling to drink which is the worst as I feel really dehydrated.

I didn't even think tonsilitous I always assumed that would be the "razors down the throat" feeling. its really feels like someone has a knife stabbing in my neck close to my throat. Its so hard to explain. The right side of my throat is fine. Arghh don't do illness. My muscles around my neck and up the left side of my head hurt to when it gets really bad.

During the worst bouts I found even swallowing spit painful (sorry). Had my tonsils out in my twenties but still get inflamed areas where they were (determined little buggers).

scattercushion · 02/04/2008 15:05

oh yes and I'd only get it on one side sometimes...

MegSophandEmma · 02/04/2008 15:48

oh god scatter yes I am holding TMI my saliva in my mouth as long as posible as its so painful just swallowing it. Just had alook on nhs website re tonsilitous and it describes the symptoms to a T.

Yes, sounds exactly like when I had tonsilitis last year as well. Glands, ear pain, throat pain. It was awful - I left it too long assuming that I probably just had a really sore throat and by the time I went to the doctors my throat had swollen up so much that when I tried to drink water, half of it trickled out my nose! Go and make sure doctor prescribes you something before you get to that stage...

summer111 · 02/04/2008 19:22

I get tonsilitis too and I end up spitting out my saliva into a basin it's that sore..if you can open your mouth wide enough to check your tonsils, you should see white pus on them - sorry for this disgusting post by the way
Try and get some anti-biotics asap as it does knock it on it's head. On one occasion my GP wrote the prescription for dh to collect as I was too feverish to get to the surgery.

Best of luck!
