Anxiety about DH’s PSA test

JohnPrescottsPyjamas · 02/05/2024 19:43

DH was successfully treated for prostate cancer 10 years ago and has annual PSA blood tests since to ensure his figures remain low.

2 weeks ago, he had a general health blood test, including PSA, as usual and 4 days later - on a Wednesday - there is a missed call and a message from his doctor asking him to call back to discuss the results. He is told the doctor will call him on Friday to have a chat. No call received all day so he rings the surgery in the late afternoon to be told by the receptionist that everything ‘except his PSA’ has come back
as normal but the doctor will now call him on Monday to discuss.

No call received on Monday, so again late afternoon he chases the surgery and has now been told the doctor will call him tomorrow (Friday) for a ‘triage’

Meanwhile I have convinced myself that it can only be bad news and am dreading the call. DH has taken the view that if it was urgent and the surgery was unduly concerned, they would have made more effort to contact him, even by post, as when he was initially diagnosed through a high PSA, they called him in to the surgery the day they got the results.
Am I fussing unduly?

No. I think it’s disgusting that you’ve been told a doctor needs to speak to you, and you’ve been left dangling. There must be something happening that needs further investigation.

Sorry that must be very worrying. Can he see the result on the NHS app?

Unfortunately, the app isn’t showing any results.
It’s frustrating that every time he has called back, the surgery hadn’t offered to make a phone appointment, so consequently it’s been nearly 10 days since the initial call.

That's awful 😳

Ring in the morning and ask to speak to the practice manager. Tell them what's happened and that you must speak to somebody tomorrow. Ask them to schedule a telephone appointment. Otherwise (and obviously you know this) it'll be Saturday and another two days before you have to start trying again.

I hope you get a call tomorrow and that all is well Flowers

There are many reason PSA can be raised beyond prostate cancer. Did you have sex the day before the blood test. Ejaculation will raise PSA. So you shouldn't have sex for 48 hours before a blood test for PSA.
Then some medications can raise it as well. Is he taking steroids for any reason? What about herbal supplements or teas?
Does he have a UTI?
How old is he? The prostate size will increase with age and so will PSA levels.

I understand how scary this is right now for you, but there are many possible causes.
Hopefully, the phone call will come soon!

Thank you for your replies - really appreciated.

Still no call. DH has rung surgery and told he’s ’on the list’ and the GP will get back to him ‘sometime today’

Managed to access it today after we found GP’s call this afternoon had gone straight to voicemail.

Unfortunately, it says: Rising PSA. Ca rx? Refer to urology.

So, I think I know where we’re going.
