Is this normal after a minor op / GA?

I had a minor gynae op on Friday, under GA. First time I've ever had an op, a GA or been in hospital.

I've been so up and down since, and it isn't what I was expecting - I thought I'd feel really shit to start with and then start to feel gradually better. I'm quite sore inside and not sleeping too well, but I felt pretty decent on Sat weirdly, not great on Sun and Mon (tired, sore, achy, bit nauseous). Yesterday I felt horrendous, so tired and wobbly and irrational and I cried on and off all day. Today I thought I felt better but I've just done a bit of housework (put a wash on, sorted the recycling, put a few things away) and now I feel like I'm going to be sick, really horrible seasicky feeling.

Is this fairly normal?

I’ve had lots of gynae procedures (5 hysteroscopies, a D&C, polyp removal and a uterine ablation). I always opt for a local if I can because the last time I had a GA I felt exactly how you describe.

Does sound very much like the affects of anaesthetic. All you can do is rest as much as possible and drink a ton of water and peppermint or ginger tea, they are really good for nausea (I suffer from gut issues and find ginger really good). Hopefully you will feel better by the end of the week.

I had a GA last week and it can make you feel nauseous on and off. As long as you’re not feeling really ill you’re probably ok.

Droolylabradors · 01/05/2024 14:11

Absolutely normal in my experience.

I cried solidly the first day, then on and off for a fortnight.

I had a hysteroscopy d&c and I've never had so much pain. I couldn't stand up for a week without it hurting.

StealthSpinach · 01/05/2024 14:18

I’ve had over 40 GAs. What you have described sounds very typical - as the anaesthetic wears off and is metabolised, it affects various systems of the body. Symptoms can wax and wane for several weeks, then one day you realise you feel “normal” again.

I’m sorry you are feeling awful, and hope you feel more yourself very soon. Take care.

I felt really rotten after a minor gynae op for a couple of weeks. I would take it a bit easier if I were you. Some people bounce back very quickly and others don’t. I had a discussion with the ward sister about this one time as the consultant was saying one should be able to get back to normal after a couple of days but the sister said she gets a lot of calls to the ward once people have gone home and it can take much longer. If you don’t feel better after resting, I suggest you give your GP a call.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 01/05/2024 15:26

You need to rest and take it easy.

Thanks so much all! It's taken me a while to come back as I was actually quite sick earlier in the end, it's passed now thank goodness

Feeling reassured that this isn't anything to be worried about, very grateful to all of you for sharing yoyr experiences as everything i found on line went along the lines of 'you may feel sick for 24-48 hours' and obvs I'm way past that so was a little worried. I have a 2 week sick note and initially I was like "pah I'm not going to need that!'...not feeling quite so sure now!

Sounds like you’re doing too much too soon.
Give it at least another 10 days

Littlemissprosecco · 01/05/2024 18:02

Your body has been pumped full of chemicals and you’ve had surgery. A simple bruise on the shin takes 10 days to go! Be kind to yourself.
All surgery, however minor, is not!

Ughifeeleubbishido · 17/05/2024 14:05

Hi everyone...back for a little advice as you were all so helpful last time! I'm now 3 weeks post hysteroscopy - I also had a blocked gland resected from my cervix at the same time. The consultant said he'd expect me to be back to normal in about a fortnight and I was feeling better but the last 2 or 3 days I've gone downhill - started bleeding again, plus a horrible dull pulling feeling in my lower abdomen and my stomach is incredibly bloated. The pain is much worse when I walk any distance or bend over.

I have a checkup next week so I'm planning to wait til then, but DH thinks I should go to A&E (no GPs appts available today and obvs its the weekend tomorrow). Should I be worried?!

Suggest you call 111 and see if they can get you seen.

Littlemissprosecco · 17/05/2024 14:12

It’s possible you have an infection, I’d get seen.

Cattyisbatty · 17/05/2024 14:26

I’d def get seen. I had surgery just over 3 weeks ago and I’m pretty much back to normal - just a bit tender/sore on the outside of the site. Was abdominal. If I had internal pain or anything wrong w the wound I’d go to the walk-in or a&e.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 17/05/2024 14:30

Call 111 definitely.

Isitchill · 17/05/2024 14:31

Please get checked out this afternoon. Don't wait until the weekend.

Curlywurlywurly · 17/05/2024 14:34

111 or a&e.

Ughifeeleubbishido · 17/05/2024 14:44

Thanks all. I've called the hospital just waiting for the nurse to call me back. I was going to leave it till Monday but you've convinced me!

Completely normal, look after yourself @Ughifeeleubbishido and rest more. You’ll soon bounce back.
