Cold - over four weeks

Has anyone ever experienced a cold for over four weeks? The symptoms are just not abating. GP suggested on the phone that I see an immunologist but didn't really explain why. Just wondered if anyone else had experienced cold-like symptoms for this long before? Bit worried about my immune system.

Did GP suggest bloods ?

ShrubRose · 30/04/2024 23:07

Are you 100% sure it's a cold? How do you feel generally?
I'm wondering if it's allergies. You can get allergies at any time of life. An allergy is a reaction of the immune system - could that be why the GP sent you to an immunologist?

Wotty · 01/05/2024 00:11

Thanks for your replies. No, no mention of bloods or allergies.

Yes, definitely. In an allergic reaction, the body releases histamines, which can lead to nasal congestion.
Wondering if you have tried any antihistamines, e.g. cetirizine. They might make you a little sleepy at first, so if you do try them, take them at night.

Hi OP, I’ve had what seems like a nasty cold for well over a month and I am also wondering if I am newly allergic to something, it’s just not shifting regardless of how much rest I try to get. I am about to try antihistamines as well just in case they work. Good luck with trying those tonight.

ana7887 · 08/05/2024 22:49

Does it get better for a few days and then starts again? Because that's what I have since December and it only stopped around 2 weeks ago...

Fingers crossed. Let us know!

Try antihistamine and see if it goes (Allevia is the best imo).

I developed hay fever in my 30s - it's horrible!

CampervanKween · 08/05/2024 22:52

I've had the same, so annoying. Really sore throat and cough. It's just not shifting and seems to be the pattern for me nowadays unfortunately 😕

Pre covid I'd take a lemsip, have an early night and I'd be fine in the morning.

Librarybooker · 08/05/2024 22:55

Don’t know if you live near us - East Anglia - but there’s been a horrible virus hereabouts that GPs think isn’t 100 day cough. Lots of people ill.

FlabMonsterIsDietingAgain · 08/05/2024 22:56

My hayfever and DDs has been acting up since late feb this year, it's been a heavy pollen year especially tree pollens.

Try antihistimes for a few days and see if that helps alleviate the symptoms. Make sure you wash your face a few times throughout the day and putting a thin layer of Vaseline under your nose can help to trap pollen before it gets into your sinuses.

mynewsidehustle · 08/05/2024 22:56

I've had a cold for about 2.5 weeks now too. Just can't shift it. Travelled in that time so don't think it can be allergies. Just wanted you to know you're not alone!

Wotty · 14/05/2024 06:54

Thanks everyone. Somehow it's still there Confused I'm now wondering whether it could be nasal polyps
