struck off from dentist, any advice please?

I need to see a dentist pretty urgently but just found out I was struck off after covid... ,my fault, I didn't even realise.

Anyhow, they have quoted me £207 for the cost of the appointment with treatment costs on top of that and then another £150 to re join. This is a private dentist as have been on a waiting list for NHS one forever.

Not sure if this is the norm or not as never been in this situation before. Can anyone advise? Am I better off calling the emergency dentist/111?

I appreciate I should have kept up with my regular appointments.

A hopeful bump….

Or if anyone could share their experiences of seeking emergency dental help when not registered at a dentist.

i think NHS dentists HAVE to offer emergency appointments... but i'm not sure of the cost

fashionqueen1183 · 30/04/2024 21:01

A fee to rejoin? Nah find somewhere else. That’s just bizarre.
I would call another private one, get your tooth sorted. Then try to find an nhs one if possible, or stick with them if you like them and can afford it.

People on local groups always say they call 111 for help with emergency dentists.

CleverCats · 30/04/2024 21:02

A rejoining/new checkup or emergency appointment is always dearer than an annual checkup

mechanicalpencil · 30/04/2024 21:08

@quietlifeneeded that’s very useful , I didn’t know that, thanks.

@fashionqueen1183
yes, I was a bit shocked. Over £350 before any treatment! I just can’t afford it 😢
Unfortunately no chance of an NHS dentist, keep periodically ringing them all only to be told either that I’m on the waiting list (have been for years) or that they don’t take nhs patients anymore often when it says they do on the nhs website.
I shouldn’t have let it get so long but after Covid, I just let things slip…
(there was no notification either).

I will try 111 and other private dentists too tomorrow.
Thank you.

Sadly not true for all nhs dentists. But if ii’s an emergency (swelling etc) then you can ring 111 and ask them to direct you to an emergency nhs appointment.

They won’t be able to do a full treatment though. Just a temporary filling or tooth removal while you try and get an appointment elsewhere.

Fluffycloudsfloatinginthesky · 30/04/2024 21:18

I got bumped off the dentist after Covid as well. Mine would not sign me back unless I had a private appointment - I assume to check I didn't need anything doing before they signed me back up.

Can you go to an NHS emergency dental hospital and be prepared to wait and possibly treated by a student (under supervision?) that's what I'd do in my city. Good luck

Yes I’ve never heard of that before -a joining fee!
Take your hard earned money elsewhere :)
I think my private dentist is about £80 for a new patient appt. Then about £60 for regular ones.

BarberellaWife · 01/05/2024 11:11

You can go on the NHS website and search for NHS dentists near you and it'll say where is accepting NHS patients. The same happened to me after Covid so I had to travel 30 minutes to somewhere that took NHS.

why should you keep up with regular appointments? It might be a condition of being on the books of a private dentist, but there is nothing health wise to say you should go to a dentist when you don't need to. I didn't go for 30 years.

that is what a lot of dentists did during covid,
went private,
and only kept their nhs patients if they had visited regularly.

i found a new nhs dentist and go every 6 months now and in fact they sent me an email saying i would not be able to continue being an nhs patient if i dont attend for 2 years.

WetBandits · 06/05/2024 07:20

I got kicked out too! They said it was because I hadn’t visited for any routine checkups for a year during Covid, I reminded them that they hadn’t been offering routine appointments during that time, only emergencies so why would I have visited when I didn’t have an emergency, and they couldn’t answer but still wouldn’t let me back in. DP got to keep his registration because he happened to need an emergency root canal during that time and he would ask the reception every time he went to please re-register me, but still nope. We’ve managed to find another local NHS dentist after a lot of searching!

LoveIsleOfWight · 06/05/2024 07:53

I had to find a dentist quickly 2 months ago, no nhs dentists in our area taking on and two quoted their wait lists at over 3 years
No rejoining costs were mentioned at any of them and I was quoted 144 for extraction and 50 for the initial appointment and xrays

I ended up phoning around the local private dentists explaining my situation and that I just needed to sort the tooth out and couldn't afford to be a regular patient, one took me for an appointment later that day!
the tooth needed a root canal and possibly a crown i think they said but i opted for an extraction as it was alot cheaper i just had to wait a few weeks for an appointment under sedation

Tooth has been out for a while now
I slightly regret removing it as it makes eating on that side a little difficult but between finances and a fear of dentists I was necessary going to sit through a root canal
