Son licked keys - WD40 was used in the lock a week ago - anxiety or A and E?

Last week I popped a bit of WD40 in my bike lock to loosen it up. Not loads just a bit. Throughout the week i've used the bike key in that lock once a day. Today my toddler managed to hook my keys off the side and when I turned round had the metal bit of the bike key in his mouth and was jangling the keys about. It would of only been in his mouth for a few seconds, there was no evidence of any oil on the key, if there was some it probably would of been trace amounts that had rubbed off slightly from when it went in and out of the lock. So in theory there may of been a small amount of wd40 on it but hardly anything. I am rolling my eyes at myself here but I have OCD so sometimes it is hard to know what is my anxiety talking and what any parent would worry about. This was about 3 hours ago. He has been FINE since. What do you think, he is 19 months old. Would you as a parent without OCD be worrying? Have called GP but the receptionist keeps just telling me to submit a query online to be looked at at some point over the next few days. Can I get a few other thoughts to give me some perspective here? Thanks lovely folk of Mumsnet. ** posting in both general health and parenting as I wasn't sure which was best. Will delete one if it is against guidelines to post twice. Wasn't sure!!

It's anxiety, DS will be fine as he's showing you - he's fine.

Anything a little bit gross will be unlikely to get through his saliva, nowhere near poisoning him.

HirplesWithHaggis · 30/04/2024 11:42

I wouldn't be worried, he's fine! Kids put all sorts in their mouths and love jangly keys.

Calypso321 · 30/04/2024 11:44

Not worried at all - he will be 100% fine.

I wouldn't have even given it at second thought. At least he didn't eat a slug or something.

eatdrinkandbemerry · 30/04/2024 11:45

He will be absolutely fine so please try not to worry x

He will be 100% fine.

He will have put things in his mouth that are disgusting that you are completely unaware of.

Yup, I wouldn't think twice about that.

WD-40 comes in an aerosol spray for easy delivery, the carrier spray evaporates very quickly leaving a thin lubricant film on whatever you sprayed. So the lock will have a thin coating of something. This won't necessarily be transferred to the key (if it came off that easily then it wouldn't be very effective). I'd be very surprised if he got any measurable amount of it at all.

If it was so dangerous that a teeny tiny amount was harmful. it would come with all sorts of warnings. In fact the data sheet says it has low oral toxicity. It's not Novichok.

I think the actual wd40 recipe is a closely guarded secret but get the impression it's heavily fish oil based and edible....
