Has anyone had untreated hyperthyroidism while pregnant? Was everything okay?

I have been saying to the GP for years that I thought my thyroid blood tests were not right but they never agreed to refer me to an endocrinologist.

Recently I became pregnant and through the hospital I did see an endocrinologist. He confirmed that I have hyperthyroidism(!!) and, after the baby is born, I can either go on tablets or have a partial thyroidectomy.

He doesn’t seem keen on medicating me currently, however five months in and my TSH is hovering around 0.02-0.05.

I can’t help but feel a bit anxious about the potential impact of this on the baby. Does anyone have any experiences of this please?

Hyperthyroidism isn’t really an issue in pregnancy, it’s hypothyroidism that’s a problem. Mine was slightly hyper but they didn’t treat it, over the course of pregnancy it slowed down to a normal range - you’ll probably find the same happens because this is normal in pregnancy. Both my kids are fine and healthy.

Thank you, it’s reassuring to know it can be less worrying.

To clarify, my levels were out of the normal range even before pregnancy, and I have a goitre. So it’s not the pregnancy per se that’s made them go out of range. In other words, I would be very surprised if they went to normal levels later in the pregnancy, because they weren’t normal even before the pregnancy! 😅
