my dd who is 4 on the the 1st june sometimes complains of pains 'down there' they seem to be located round the clitoral area, it doesnt happen all the time and i dont think she has any trouble weeing, it has happened again this morning, shes jumps and say 'OW' so from what i can gather it seems to be like a shooting pain, like i say, happens around once a fortnight and should also add shes forever messing with it So is this a growing pain thing dya think?

OP posts:
loopylou6 · 02/04/2008 09:44

oh, should also add, it only lasts for seconds

OK there is no need to cringe about girl's genitals

Bear in mind that children this young are pretty rubbish at identifying where pain is coming from

I wouldn't worry too much unless it is persistent

cazzybabs · 02/04/2008 09:47

I would take her to the docotr (well I wouldn't but then I hate going to the docs and my children have to be on death's door to go) but that is what I would advice you!!!!

Oliveoil · 02/04/2008 09:50

is the area red or sore looking? smelly?

if none of the above then hopefully she doesn't have an infection

if it continues it may be worth getting the doctor to check it out

my two are forever fiddling about so maybe she has scratched herself?

BBBee · 02/04/2008 09:51

might be worth having a chat about 'wiping' strategies and getting some wet wipes if there is any sign of soreness.

Oliveoil · 02/04/2008 09:52

dd2 gets red and inflamed sometimes (no idea why) so I put Sudacrem on and it goes

she doesn't wipe properly when going to the toilet so I think she can sometimes inflame her bits

and don't worry about her 'messing with it' as it is just a part of her body, same as her elbow or her nose, they like to fiddle

foxythesnowman · 02/04/2008 09:53

DD was sore. She wasn't wiping herself dry. If its red and sore on the outside, a wee dab of Sudocreme.

loopylou6 · 02/04/2008 09:53

thanks MP, have u ever noticed this behaviour with your girl/s? CB, am the same as you, i avoid docs where possible

OO, thanks for that, nope havent noticed any redness or smelliness thankfully, very possible she has scratched herself though
BB and FTS good suggestion, will keep an eye on that

DD had an infection in her labia last year sometime that caused a bit of redness and soreness, it soon cleared up, we were advised just to use savlon or similar by our GP. Nothing to worry about at all, unless it continues for a while.

serenity · 02/04/2008 10:01

From my experience with DD...

Is it red? Then maybe it needs a clean, she might not be wiping properly after she has a wee, and if she then gets hot and sweaty it can make the area sore.

If there's a discharge it might be a little infection, or thrush. GP can give you a very mild canestan cream which helps.

How about Threadworms? It's DDs first symptom when she gets a bout of worms - they get 'lost' when they come out of the anus as the areas so small, and if they find their way into the vagina they can make it sore and irritable. If DD complains of a pain rather than general soreness we have so far always found she has worms.

Unfortunately sore bits seems to be quite common when they're this age - old enough to use the toilet independantly, but too young to really do it properly themselves.

thank you TF

A shooting pain for a few seconds every 2 weeks I WOULD IMAGINE is just from bruising from where she's been playing with herself

Constant pain I would worry about or redness/soreness etc.

Mine play with themselves all the time and often get redness/soreness too - but that's dealt with with sudocrem or canestan if they look thrushy

loopylou6 · 02/04/2008 10:05

S thats interesting, never thought of worms, will have to stick my head down the toilet now afetr shes had a poo to look for wriggling things lol, (oh the joys of parent hood) I suppose one of the main worries i have is what if she has actually managed to lodge something up there? she does mess alot? but then the rational less panicky side of me says that this has been going on for a good while now intermittantly so if she had done that there would of been other signs wouldnt there?

thanks MP thats what im hoping, reasurring to know that its not just my dd who likes messing, sometimes i think shes obsessed (can u tell ive not had a girl before )

Is it just when she wees? Could it be a urine infection/cysitis? I had this on and off from being about 4 and my dd had it when she was about 2.5. She had antobiotics and it cleared up. However I would add I manage cysitis now without antibiotics as i beleive inthe longterm they don't help at all.

namechangingforthisone · 02/04/2008 10:15

okay this is goona sound really strange probably but she doesn't poke her bellybutton when it happens does she? The reason I say that is because all of my life, whenever I was little and put my finger in my bellybutton or even now when i'm in the shower and cleaning it, I get a sharp shooting pain 'down there' that last about a second. It really does make me jump and I have no clue why it happens, maybe a nerve thing?????? The weird thing is that there are a couple family members that this also happens to

TigerFeet · 02/04/2008 10:17

DD plays with herself all the time. WHen she comes home from nursery the tights and knickers are straight off and she sits on the sofa, legs spread, airing herself and having the odd fiddle. A stern "stop that dd you'll make yourself sore" puts a stop to it. She's a naturist at heart I think. I reckon she gets it from her dad - I am a prude

loopylou6 · 02/04/2008 10:32

cardy, i dont think she has trouble weeing, will keep a close eye on it though just incase NCFTO not sure about dd and her belly button, but i know what u mean, i get a funny pain when i clean my belly button aswell. TF i know what u mean, my dd is exactly the same only she takes it further by lying on her hands or on a pile of cushions

eemie · 02/04/2008 10:47

A warm bath and a thorough rinse and dry always sorted my dd out when she complained of a sore fanny, even if there was no obvious redness. I taught her to have an extra wipe after going to the loo to 'make sure' because that was often the trouble.

PotPourri · 02/04/2008 10:53

Soiund slike it could be as others have said that she sin't drying herself properly so it is chaffing. The other thing could be strong wee/acidic. Try getting her to drink cranberry juice, and make sure she has tonnes to drink in general.

I remember having sore bits when weeing when I was little, on and off. Never thought about it before now. Must have been not drying properly.

Oh, other thing, could her pants be rubbing her - i.e. wedgy style, or too tight??

greenday · 02/04/2008 10:56

My DD turns 4 this June too and she too has complained about pains down there. Although its not a shooting pain, she always cringe and cries when I try to wipe / wash her down-there properly. She's also begun to touch her bits too. Although I have wondered if there really are pains there, she seems fine too (no trouble weeing, etc) so I tend to think its a phase. Good to be re-assured still!

loopylou6 · 02/04/2008 11:14

thanks eemie and PP, GD, that is reasurring to know that a child of the same age seems to have the same problem, kids are such a worry arnt they and ihear it doesnt get better as they get older
