Tooth removal- any tips?

Hi all,
I'm having a tooth removed tomorrow- maybe two. Any tips? I'm thinking of taking two ibroprufen before the extraction. Good idea? Not looking forward to it all!

Definitely a good idea to take painkillers beforehand as you may be so numb afterwards that getting tablets down could be tricky. I had a tooth out last week and was too numb for a few hours to drink properly. I did wish I'd pre-loaded as it were! The actual removal was just a bit uncomfortable- there was so much local in my jaw it didn't hurt at all. Make sure you have something soft to eat afterwards and the next couple of days. Good luck!

Bordering on petrified! I know it will be numb there but it's the pulling and feeling I'm worried about

Soft food and no sucking! I stupidly ate a baby fruit pouch after mine because I thought it would be ok as soft. My clot didn't form properly (may or may not have been due to the fruit pouch!).

I've had a large molar removed and a root removed, both procedures were absolutely fine - they push rather than pull and it was really quick, I did get dry socket after the molar though so watch out for that, do exactly as they say for aftercare and hopefully you'll be fine, good luck!

Had a top wisdom tooth removed. Was petrified. The dentist did the numbing injections. I was thinking I wish she’d hurry up and take it out now. OMG she’d already done it! Didn’t feel a thing! She advised paracetamol before the anaesthetic wore off. Don’t gargle because the clot needs to form over the hole. Face looked a bit puffy for few days. Not had any probs since. Honestly it was fine x

Painkillers and leave it alone afterwards - don't drink through a straw or make any 'sucky' motions when eating or swilling to clean your mouth, the pain of dry socket is far worse than toothache

If you can- drink loads of pineapple juice before hand! DH had a terrible time after having a wisdom tooth out, someone recommended it to him before he had the second one out and his recovery so much easier!! It is something to do with the enzymes? I’m sure Google would know!

Interesting about the pineapple juice- we have some at home. I'm thinking of having a programme on my phone to watch to distract t me.

Didn't know about the clotting. So no sucking or gargling? Soft food...ice cream? How long should it take to clot? The night? Should be okay the next day?

It's really no big deal. The bit that was uncomfortable was the dentist's hand stretching my mouth. The actual tooth was out before I knew it! Just be cautious afterwards and stick to yoghurt, soft foods etc.

Had a large back tooth out a month ago. Was fine. Didnt hurt. But took a few tuggs to come out! After care- dont use a straw. Eat on other side of mouth, soft for that day, normal day after ish. I gargeld with salt water for about a week after. Swelling for a few days. After a week ish felt normal and the hole now is just like normal gum. Its filled up quick. I think its important to make sire the blood clot that forms does not dislodge as this can cause dry socket. But my dentist told me this only happens rarely and to follow above aftercare. Good luck x

Definitely recommend putting some earphones in and a playlist nice and loud. Eyes shut and sound blocked out by music and you should feel more relaxed. It helped me not knowing what was going on just trusting that I wouldn't feel anything and that it would soon be over.
Don't gargle or rinse enthusiastically afterwards, or use a straw. Let the clot form and stay in place. Good luck!

Just to echo everyone else really, follow the guidelines they give you. No sucking through straws / smoking in the days afterwards. When you can start gently washing with salt water just let it sit on the area, don't thrash it around in your mouth. And let the water dribble out of your mouth rather than spitting. Spitting and sucking can dislodge the clot.

I ate soft foods for about a week after my wisdom tooth extraction. I just felt more comfortable doing that and Iove mashed potato/root veg mash anyway so I was quite happy!
