High blood pressure in early 30’s!

Mardyybum · 26/04/2024 19:26

I have today been prescribed Ramipril for high blood pressure (around 140/100 at the GP surgery this afternoon)

I had high BP in both pregnancies but was never medicated as it was so up and down so I suspect it’s been going on a while and actually wasn’t caused by pregnancy (I’m 7 months postpartum)

I’m terrified - early 30s. Have lost 3 stone since my first pregnancy 3 years ago but approx 2.5 stone to go to reach a healthy BMI. I don’t drink alcohol but do use disposable vapes which I’ve now chucked in the bin. Go to the gym a couple of times a week also.
Life has been very very stressful recently. Had a breakdown to the lovely nurse and she also prescribed setraline anti depressants.

Dad and grandad both had heart related issues and both died age 57 (although Dad had brain tumour so death wasn’t caused by his heart issues). I don’t want to die 😩

Did they loan you a blood pressure machine to use at home for a week or two to measure your pressure when you are not stressed and relaxed before actually prescribing? My blood pressure always is way too high at the doctor's - "white coat syndrome".

Be thankful that this has been detected and you are on the right meds. Having a healthy lifestyle is great but sometimes meds are still needed. There are many walking about undiagnosed. I have inherited HBP and have been on meds since I was 40. Don't worry. Tbh your reading wasn't that high.

I got high blood pressure in my early 30s too

purpleme12 · 27/04/2024 00:15

Yes also agree it doesn't sound that high

Mine was ridiculously high A LOT when it was detected

Mardyybum · 27/04/2024 14:47

@sparklychair yes I’m doing checks twice daily for a week. My numbers are lower today but still high - 130/92.

@AnnieSF yes I suppose that’s how I need to look at it. Numbers have come down today but still high so hopefully the medicine is starting to get to work.

@purpleme12 thanks for making me feel less alone. How is yours now? Are you medicated?

I have no wise words, but I am on Ramipril as my blood pressure is far too high. I am in my 40s. I am overweight and do drink alcohol in moderate amounts, but I am also under an immense amount of pressure and have a lot of shit going on in my private and professional life.
You are not alone!

purpleme12 · 27/04/2024 15:10

Yes I'm on medicine. Two different types of tablets.

I haven't taken my reading for a fair while to be honest. I probably should do

I had high blood pressure in one pregnancy and preeclampsia in the second (both of which had to be medicated). At the post partum hypertension clinic, the doctor told me that issues which appear in pregnancy are often indicators of issues that may have appeared later in life anyway. And that this is in some ways a good thing, as it gives you chance to make lifestyle changes before its too late. It sounds like you are making some positive changes and that the GP has caught it early so hopefully you'll start to see a difference soon Flowers

Ramipiril has never worked for me, but felodipine + propanolol does. GP thinks my BP is hereditary too. If I follow a strict diet and exercise regime, I can do without the meds. However, if I catch any bugs/viruses it seems to affect my heart and BP climbs up to frightening levels.

It's good this has been picked up on Mardyybum as BP can affect many things, including mental health (all that adrenaline swilling around?)
