Both mine were, and I have to say that it wasn't helpful in either case . Sorry. It made ds projectile vomit even further than you would think possible.

Sorry not to be positive, but I have heard it work wonders on other children.

MrsMills · 01/04/2008 19:35

Yes, ds2 was prescribed it when he was only 3 months old, and yes it did work. Twas a bit tricky getting him to take it though.

princessmel · 01/04/2008 19:36

Ds was as a baby. it didn't work though as it turned out he didn't have reflux. Hope it works for your nephew.

Idobelieveinfairies · 01/04/2008 19:37

Oh dear, sorry to hear it didn't work for your children

What happened next for you?

My sister had to really push for the gaviscon..( we never knew that it might work for reflux) as my nephew is of good weight. But he is soooo sick it is crazy!

ds was prescribed it, didnt work brilliantly but the other qualm i had was theres sodium in it. there is an infant formula (if he is on formula that is) called Enfamil which doesnt have the sodium, ds was put on that and it helped immensely!!!

TheDazedJuggler · 01/04/2008 19:38

yes - used it with ds2. It worked really well when I could get her to take it.

homefromwork · 01/04/2008 19:38

My dd was finally prescribed this at 18 weeks. It worked really well. She had been an unsettled baby with lots of reflux symptoms. After Gaviscon she changed almost overnight - very little vomiting and much more settled and happy. We stopped it when she was aboout 11 months when she decided she didn't want milk anymore! Hope your nephew has good results.

Idobelieveinfairies · 01/04/2008 19:40

Well we don't know if it is 'reflux' either...he is just very sicky. He will have his food and he is still sicking it up 2 hours later!..its not projectile vomiting just a continous 'leak'.

This is the first time she has taken him because i know babies can be sicky just because they are babies (mine all were)...but once they were on solids they were fine. With nephew it isn;t getting any better.

it sounds like reflux or pyloric stenosis

DS had silent reflux (reflux without vomiting) and gaviscon just made him worse

we then had him on ranitadine and domperidone both of which worked brilliantly

princessmel · 01/04/2008 19:47

I was speaking to my friend today and they thought her baby had reflux. But it turned out he had a problem with his stomach. Which was genetic from his mother.
Maybe if this doesn't work she should keep pushing for more ideas? Poor baby. And it must be worrying for her.

Idobelieveinfairies · 01/04/2008 19:53

well, the doctor immediately said 'some babies are just sicky'...so i think she will have to push very hard!....basically we know babies can be sicky and resolve itself, she has waitied until this age because of knowing this...does that make sense?

He is/always has been a difficult baby, really quite wingey. We have been waiting for him to outgrow all of it but dosen't seem to be happening. He eats lots and lots (probably because of the sickness)..it's like a big vicious circle!

I think the next step is the baby clinic....perhaps a couple of hours there and the health visitor will witness what we are on about!

My DS had reflux and no gaviscon did not work it made him vomit more. He then got prescribed Domperidone and Ranitidine which did the trick.

emma1977 · 01/04/2008 20:14

Pyloric stenosis presents at around 6-8 weeks, so it definitely isn't that.

Reflux is very common and some kids respond really well to gaviscon. Others needs additional antacids, antiemetics, etc.

My son has been on gaviscon for 8 weeks which worked OK apart from the side effect of causing really bad constipation. He has fared much better on half the dose with additional ranitidine.

The sodium content really isn't is such a quantity to be a cause for concern.

CountTo10 · 01/04/2008 20:33

DS1 had gaviscon from 3mths to about 10mths for reflux and it was an absolute godsend!!! He used to bring up his feeds all the time and spend most of the day being sick but once we got him on it he was a lot better. They;re also a lot better once they start on solids.

Idobelieveinfairies · 01/04/2008 20:39

I have never heard of pyloric stenosis. He has always been very sicky. We were thinking it was a family thing as all of mine were very sicky, all 8 of them, tried the stay down milk and stuff. But once they were on solids it virtually stopped. But with nephew it is just continuing.

With milk, the minute he sits up after drinking it is like a tap being tunred on, he then continues every so often to be sick..sometimes lots, sometimes bits. The slightest hiccup and up it comes.

With solids it takes a while to come up, and it is mucusy. It dosen't bother him at the time of being sick. of course with the added crawling through it it seems like buckets full!

You are great with your replies, you are much more help than the g.p it would seem.

Ds1 had this from 6-12 months, and should have had it sooner (I didn't realise that it wasn't normal to bring so much stuff back after a feed). It was a godsend.

Idobelieveinfairies · 01/04/2008 20:45

Good good, sounds like a big chance it might work then. Is it an immediate difference? first lot would have been given tonight, and then in the morning with his morning milk feed.

Then i am off to playgroup with him. I wonder how many muslins to take with me!!!...might be able to finish the cup of coffee there before the big mop up!

Idobelieveinfairies, you could be descirbing my ds, 1 in 2 weeks. I went to the doctors with him last week and mentioned the sickness and she just told me if it isn't bothering him and he's gaining weight and doing all the normal things then not to worry he will grow out of it. It just takes some children longer than others. She said she didn't want to give drugs unless it was necessary, as in ds is bothered by it. He's a lovely baby and sleeps through, eats well etc etc. No idea what his weight is and he is in smaller clothes than his age, maybe i should get him weighed?

It disgusting though isn't it? My dd had the same thing but once she was on solids it slowed and then stopped. DS' is better some days than others but it's always there.
