No poo for nearly 24 hours in 5 week old

My normally very poo-ey baby has stopped pooing.

He doesn't seem to be in pain and his appetite is normal. He's a bit snuffly and is sleeping as usual.

How long is too long to go without a poo?

I'm hoping that just writing this will trigger a movement as he seems to be wanting to go and is a bit trumpy.

What can I do for a baby who's constipated?

They do slow down a bit at this stage on the poo front. 24 hours is still v normal!! Is your little one breast or bottle fed?

Glammama · 01/04/2008 18:06

A bit of both, long story but fecking midwives on post natal word ensured that baby went from latching and sucking properly on the breast to only wanting their fecking cow and gate with mahoosive teats. It's a long road back but he's finally taking some milk from me but I have to admit that the bulk of his feeds are Hipp formula.

I was pretty sure the formula is causing this but why now?

Thank you for reassuring me about the 24 hours though. I guess I'm so used to changing about 6 dirty nappies a day I was taken aback by just getting wet ones.

My LO went 48 hrs without a poo when she was about 8 wks. Then the poo arrived to end all poos and we were back to normal.

Goodness, I better be prepared then! My only concern is that it seems like he's trying to go and can't, iyswim.

As long as he's farting you know the gut is still working.

I was always told "5 times a day or every 5 days" and anything in between is normal!

poodlepusher · 01/04/2008 18:33

Yes I should have added, it was 48 hrs of red faced shouting and public grunting, much checking of nappies in hope of finding something, being disappointed by absence of poo, etc etc and so on.

poodlepusher · 01/04/2008 18:34

erm she was red faced and shouting / grunting. I was checking. Just to clarify!

poodlepusher

I am glad to report we have poo! Just a small bit but poo nonetheless.

Thank you for all your replies. You helped put my mind at rest. It's been 7.5 years since I had a new baby to care for and in some respects it's like being a first time mum all over again.
