Is this chicken pox? He's only got four spots!

When I did DS nappy mid morning on Sunday he had a spotty botty and just thought it was a mild nappy rash.

But when I collected him from nursery last night they said they thought he might have CP as has one red spot on his knee with a blister in the middle as well as the spots on his bottom.

This morning there are three below it. He has a very slight temp, up just half a degree.

I took him to a drop in clinic this morning and saw (a rather yummy male) nurse who said he was fairly sure it was too.

If his first spots appeared on Sunday, when would I expect all the spots he's going to get, to have appeared?

They just keep coming. Be aware that if he only gets a few spots, which is possible, he will not be totally immune and can catch this again. It took ds about 6 days for the spots to come out completely and start to heal.

calsworld · 01/04/2008 16:41

Oh crikey. In the bath last night it looked like he had some on his other leg but they aren't there now. I guess its the blistery bits in the middle of the red that make it CP as opposed to anything else? Have been doing some reading and am trying to convince myself its not CP!

Am contemplating the possibility of flea bites - anyone know how likely it would be for a nurse to mis-diagnose.

And yes, I am aware that I am MAJORLY clutching at straws!!

why wouldn't you want it to be cp?

sparkleymummy · 01/04/2008 16:44

It could still be chicken pox. DS1 was covered from head to toe. DS2 came out in only five spots.

LilRedWG · 01/04/2008 16:44

My sister only had three spots - one on her elbow, one on her bottom, and one on her back (I think).

ScienceTeacher · 01/04/2008 16:46

I've already answered on the other thread, but re: fleabites. We had just moved house and it had fleas in the carpets, plus it was a particularly buggy summer so outside wasn't great either. DS had just a handful of spots, but I wasn't convinced, and didn't want to embarrass myself by drawing attention to fleabites . But it was CP, when DD got them two weeks later.

Fleabites tend to appear on ankles (of walking people). They won't be in a baby's nappy.

Trinity, I'm being really crap...and some would say selfish...

I work full time and I've got loads of meetings coming up so its just rubbish timing. I'm away tomorrow night on business so DH is going to have to take two days off work to look after him...Not that I know when it would be a good time of course.

I have no family around to look after him, its just me and DH.

From an immunity point of view, I have absolutely no objection to him having them.

Does anyone know if flea bites look like CP?

ST - which other thread? I've only started this one although I have mentioned on my TTC thread - do you mean on there....I'll go look...

Good point about his bottom ...don't think fleas would survive with his trumps nevermind anything else!!

Ho hum. CP it is then. DS and DH will probably have a lovely time if DS stays as chirpy as he is now.

So, onto second question of how long it takes for all spots to come out - three to four days?

Ds has cp at the moment. Had 2 spots on his neck last weds and on thurs a few on his tummy, then they just kept coming and he is covered. Was ill the week before but not now the spots are here.He had them in his mouth and so it was painful to eat much but they are scabbing over now.He wil be allowed back to nursery v soon. Not many children are ill with cp so if he has there is nothing to worry about leaving him with dh.Was he ill recently, a temp or cold?

calsworld · 01/04/2008 17:39

He's had a cough for ages, which doc said was nothing to worry about, just elevate his cot, which we've done.

But his nose got super snotty at the end last week, nursery girls were teasing me about him being a little snot factory! He's also been really grumpy with them but last week he started having sessions in the toddler unit and this week he was supposed to be building it up to 'mini-days' with them and next week fully in toddlers.

I think they mentioned one of the toddlers had CP so it is possible from a contact pov.

He has a little bit of a temp today, only half a degree though - I guess I knew from that it wasn't going to be flea bites, but like I said, clutching at straws!

ST - just found the other thread that it appears I started! I didn't realise there was two...was just browsing 'my talk' and found it.

Ooops. Sorry for any confusion.

Hi, definately CP as he has white blobs on his tongue..this isn't a problem is it?

OP posts:
calsworld · 01/04/2008 20:38

bump

OP posts:
calsworld · 02/04/2008 09:07

Ok - so now am very puzzled. The spots on his leg have gone? The ones on his tongue still seem to be there but aren't white any more.

Any suggestions anyone?

Phoned NHS Direct and they said that it could be a very mild case of CP but get him checked by a doctor. Got an appt booked at 10 so we'll see what happens next. They're going to put me in a side room just in case it is CP and he's still contagious.

In the meantime, interested to know if anyone has experienced CP for only three days?

my 13month old ds has a few little red spots on his back a couple more on his front and 1 on his knee. Im not sure if they are cp or not. They are small red spots and some of them have a little red patch of skin around them. He has no temperature and seems otherwise perfectly healthy.
there was a little boy at the toddler group we go to who had cp a couple of weeks ago so he could have caught it there but my dd who also goes doesnt have any spots

calsworld · 03/04/2008 21:46

Hi, all - thanks to everyone who posted for me. Turns out DS didn't have CP, he had hand foot and mouth!

After having had confirmation from both a pharmacist and a nurse at an nhs drop in centre but yet still feeling really doubtful, I took him to the docs Weds morning and he confirmed it definately wasn't CP. He couldn't see the spots in DS mouth because DS just bit the stick they try to use to see in his mouth with!

Anyway, phoned nursery to say it def. wasn't CP as they wanted to know DX, and when I said about the spots in the mouth she said, oh, that'll be hand foot and mouth then, we've had a couple of confirmed cases!

So, he's back at nursery, little bit of calpol to make his mouth more comfortable and he's eating again now so that's clearly fixed that problem.

Nursery have however had a couple more cases of CP so it may be just around the corner!!

Fiodyl, I think with CP the spots would be quite big (about 5mm) and have a liquid filled head on them, does that sound like what your DS has? If in doubt, pharmacist may be able to help , but don't stand next to any pregnant women with him!

OP posts:
fiodyl · 04/04/2008 12:50

not really they are just red and some of them have disappeared now and there hasnt been any new 1s for 2 days so I doubt it is CP. He doesnt seem unwell at all.. in fact he has just learnt how to run up and down the living room 50 times a day pushing his Thomas!

calsworld · 04/04/2008 20:35

Is he scratching? Just wondering if he has / had some kind of dermatitis? He doesn't seem to be suffering though which is the good bit.

OP posts:
fiodyl · 05/04/2008 11:14

nope hes not scratching and doesnt seem bothered by them at all

Thinking back they do look kind of similar to the spots he had as a newborn except those ones would come and go and 'moved' over his body

calsworld · 14/05/2008 18:31

Is anyone out there that can help? I'm having more issues with DS and his spots.

First time round when he only had about half a dozen spots in total, nursery thought it was chicken pox, doctor said not, nursery then said could possibly be hand, foot and mouth. Spots disappeared, so didn't really worry about it.

Now, here I am, a month down the line, and they're back - with reinforcements, on his back yesterday in a band around waist line, on the back of his hand, on his thigh...but still all very tiny....

Today they seem to be getting bigger and there's more of them.

Does it sound likely that he had a v mild case a month ago and now has it 'properly'?

Do I need to go somewhere to get it diagnosed?

He's not scratching them - which the doctor said yesterday was key to diagnosing it,

I wish I knew what I was doing....

lilolilmanchester · 14/05/2008 18:33

maybe pop into a pharmacy and see if the pharmacist can help? Often use them as first port of call, they'll only comment if they really know otherwise will tell you to go to GP.

calsworld · 14/05/2008 18:42

lilo thanks - we went last time and they said last lot was CP, but then doctor sad it wasn't . I could try again....is a&e stretching it a bit , that's what mum suggested.

OP posts:
calsworld · 14/05/2008 18:44

I just feel like such a pest with all this, but its not unreasonable to want a diagnosis is it?
