Birthmark removal - what a lovely GP

ds2 (nearly 9) has a large, dark brown hairy naevus on the lower part of his back/top of his bum. It's oval shaped and about 2.5"x2", which is quite big on his tiny bum.

Also, because he is skinny his trousers are always round his hips, so it can be seen.

He's been asking for some time (over a year) about having it removed. So I eventually took him to the GP today.

She was fantastic, and spoke primarily directly to him, which is what I wanted. She's referred him to the paediatric dermatologist at the hospital for a chat about what the possibilities are.

omg, that's a tiny mark - would it be a big operation?

i have a HUGE birthmark, always visible in it's entirety and i didn't like it when i was that age but actually i never even think of it any more.

We'll have to see what the dermatologist thinks.
It would definitely need a skingraft at least.

There's no medical reason for its removal - they never turn malignant or anything. But sometimes there is abnormal tissue underneath, and as it's close to his spine, they may be reluctant. We'll see!

well good luck with it! i'm really glad you found a nice gp - i remember a doctor i went to making a smart remark about mine disappearing when i got a sun tan...... what an idiot.

to be honest i would have done anything to get rid of it during one (short) stage, but now I'm really glad i didn't. i'm actually quite fond of it!

What a nice story- it cheers me up when people say nice things about their GP. Makes me realise that not everyone thinks we're crap (which is the impression I often get from reading these threads).

Good luck to your son

My Dd1 has one like that on her leg, its looks like a huge mole. She hates it. I didn;t even thhink about having it removed, but I did mentioned it to the GP once and he said that because of it, she is at higher risk of skin cancer.
