Sore eye - like the socket not the actual eye

Been like this since Sunday. Feel like it's had a knock or been hit or something but I haven't had anything like that. It aches a lot and hurts when I look to the far side or right up or down. Also hurts a bit when I look at bright light.

I was thinking it was sinus pain but it's much more in the socket and my eye is sore to the touch. My cheek and ear are aching now too.

Any ideas? Can't get an appointment at the Drs for nearly 2 wks so was thinking the optician might be worth a try?

Phone NHS direct. I don't think opticians deal with these sorts of problems so you need to see a doctor. Do they have a walk in eye clinic at your local hospital?

They don't at my local one but they do at one that's 15 miles away - I'm over that way on Thursday so might see if it's not easing by then to pop in. I'm going to try for an emergency Drs tomorrow and failing that might give NHS direct a call. I'm not in an awful lot of pain though so not sure it warrants an emergency appointment. It's just very strange.

You have to be careful with eyes, an infection could be nasty. Do they have a minor injuries unit at your local hospital? They might be able to have a look at it for you. I don't think you should leave it really.

Ideally you need a proper eye exam with a slit lamp.

Is there any redness or itching?

Your symptoms so far are similiar to those of uveitis/iritis (chronic sufferer so very recognisable to me) which can be treated simply at this stage but needs catching quite quickly.

Thanks. THere's no redness or itching or irritation. It looks totally normal. I've googlde uveitis and going by the symptoms that's a possibility. It's feeling a little better this evening so I'll see how it is in the morning.

Me and DH had a virus a couple of weeks ago and one of the symptoms were really painful achy eyes. I couldn't even look sideways it was agony. TBH neither of us were particularly ill, it was weird. It went after about 4 or 5 days. Could be the same sort of thing???

suzi2 · 01/04/2008 21:01

I've been wondering that gingerninja. DS (2.7) was complaining last week of sore eyes and was squinting at lights. I thought it was just that he had the cold. But it might be that we've all had something.

Agree its very possible its caused by a virus, a while ago i had painful eyes like GN describes, very uncomfortable looking round, it went a fter a couple of days

suzi2 · 03/04/2008 10:07

Thanks for all the advice. It was much better yesterday and has pretty much resolved itself today so I assume it's a virus.
