Gastritis?

brightpinkglitter · 19/04/2024 19:24

I went to the doctors today as I've been suffering with upper stomach pain, no appetite and feeling very full and sick after eating. I can eat half a sandwich and feel sick and like I've had a huge meal.

His words were that he thinks I've damaged my stomach lining from taking ibroprofen for back pain.. on googling I think this is gastritis? I've been given tablets, anti sickness and gaviscon.

Has anyone had this? Would you trust this diagnosis?

I don’t know but watching above got exactly the same problem…… on holiday at the moment but going to gp when I get home. This has been going on a couple of weeks

Pixiedust88 · 19/04/2024 19:40

It sounds like it. I had gastritis last year and was hospitalised because I was projectile vomiting for over 24 hours. I take really strong painkillers for fibromyalgia which have damaged my stomach lining so am on gastro tablets as well which do help. If it gets worse you might need something stronger than gaviscon

brightpinkglitter · 19/04/2024 19:40

@ScottishScouser how long has it been going on for you? It's horrible isn't it. I get hunger pangs so think good maybe I'm getting better.. a few bits later I'm full, bloated and trying not to be sick Sad

I'm in the same boat. I'm smashing through the pain killers for hip pain and just feel constantly low level sick. I've hardly eaten anything this week as I just can't face it.

brightpinkglitter · 19/04/2024 19:42

@Pixiedust88 really! Poor you. Did you have any symptoms in the lead up to the vomiting, feeling full etc? I was given lanzoprazole too sorry they were the tablets I meant x

OP posts:
brightpinkglitter · 19/04/2024 19:43

@garlictwist it's horrible isn't it! I only feel ok ish when I have absolutely nothing in my stomach. I still have the pains but not the fullness or severe nausea.. I feel a bit hungry so eat a few mouthfuls and the cycle starts again 😢

Inuprofen or Naproxen etc can be really rough on the lining of the stomach and cause ulcers and inflammation.
Hopefully you have been started on Omeprazole or similar . Take it 30 mins before breakfast and 30 mins before your evening meal ( if prescribed twice a day) for it to work most effectively .
If your symptoms don’t improve you should go back to your GP as a Gastroscopy might be needed as your symptoms should be checked out .

Mine was triggered two weeks ago. I went to bed ok. I did make the mistake of taking some painkillers (codeine) on an empty stomach at 3am as I was in so much pain with an ongoing issue. I’d had some wine earlier in the evening.

I’ve done that before however and been fine. Not often!

woke up on the Sunday morning sick as a dog. I was leaving the country on the Thursday on holiday for three weeks so figured it would pass but a week later I’m still having issues.

I’ve got some degree of the shits as well.

it came on really suddenly for me so I’m too concerned about anything too sinister but maybe I’m kidding myself.

stargazer02 · 19/04/2024 19:52

Was diagnosed with it after 4 days of constant vomiting which was just bile because I couldn't keep water down. Pain was right up there with labour pains. Ended up in a&e on fluids as was so dehydrated. Then the anti-nausea medicine was given and the relief was huge.
They told me to eat a really basic diet - nothing too acidic or sweet or salty, or difficult to digest. Bread, pasta etc was Def out.
Think I nibbled on cooked carrots and pear for a few days as I was so wiped out I was mostly sleeping.

Prior to this I'd been having excruciating pains some evenings at my solar plexus - not often , maybe once every other month for maybe 7 years. Funnily enough I didn't get them again after that hospital visit until last night. About a 5 year break!

loropianalover · 19/04/2024 19:55

sounds like it alright. I had Gastritis a few years ago it is the most awful awful pain. Like a car tire around your middle that’s just getting smaller and smaller and you can barely breathe. Bone broth was extremely relieving for me if you have access.

Google low inflammatory diet or gastritis diet, eat small amounts regularly so you don’t get too hungry and binge.

brightpinkglitter · 19/04/2024 19:56

@stargazer02 I'm sorry that happened to you! Did you have anything that could've triggered it? Did they do an endoscopy or anything to diagnose? It's good you said that as I've been eating things like toast and pasta assuming they were plain and wouldn't irritate it.
I'm 32 but I'm getting myself in a panic in case it's something more sinister as I've never had anything like this before.

Honestly, I was so out of it I don't really remember my time in hospital but Def did not have an endoscopy! I do remember blood tests, ecg and chest x-rays. I have a feeling mine was a bacteria something pylori? So not due to medication. I think going really gentle and slow with food would be best in long run.

OnNaturesCourse · 19/04/2024 20:10

Had this before.

I'm pretty sure I had gastritis, having already damaged my stomach from pain killers for my back (just Ibruprofen)

Started as odd indigestion, then progressed to exactly what you described.

I battled on for 6 months with little to no help. I fell pregnant a month after symptoms started and figured the symptoms could now be contributed to that, I unfortunately lost the pregnancy but the symptoms remained albeit not to the same extent they were in pregnancy.

For that 6 months I took the off omeprazole (kept getting given 2 or 3 weeks worth and tbh didn't have strength in the end to get more help) I did occasionally take a anti acid but all they did was make me burp.

A month after my pregnancy ended I was at my wits end and broke down at my GP. He suspected acid reflux that had gone on so long it caused damage.

I was given a repeat prescription of omeprazole, 4 time a day to start with and weaned down. Also Peptic stuff to take as and when needed on top of the anti acid tablets. A anti spasm medicine was discussed but I declined wanting to see how the above helped first.

I also cut everything out. I lived off plain pasta and water for a week before introducing things back in.

Took about a month for things to settle.

I'm now about 6 or 7 months down the line, my omeprazole is down to once a day (twice a day during certain points of my cycle as apparently common for these symptoms to worsen then, and they do for me!) I eat whatever I fancy, and back to my fizzy juices.

I'd say I'm pretty much back to normal, aside from the odd day here and there but I'd say that's just basic indigestion now as it no where near as bad as it was. My pain before was constant, with major flare ups of it thrown in...now it's just some discomfort occasionally.

GP says it could now just be my stomach will be sensative, says like a external scar... They can get irritated. (scarred lining possibly)

Definitely seek help and don't let it go on as I did, you just get more issues. I don't think it resolves itself..

Computercalendar · 19/04/2024 20:12

I had gastritis for the first time a couple of years ago. It took two weeks for the omeprazole to work. The pain was sooo bad and I hardly ate at all. You need to drink fennel tea. Buy the twinnings one. It relaxes the stomach muscles. It will really help.

Pixiedust88 · 19/04/2024 20:40

@brightpinkglitter

No, I just felt sick and then it started. At first I thought I’d had too much alcohol (NYE) but after throwing up most of NYD and night went to the hospital. Originally they thought I had gallstones but after a scan they said it was gastritis. They put it down to my tablets not mixing with the amount of alcohol I’d had even though I’d not taken them knowing I’d be drinking. Needless to say I haven’t drank since and fortunately it hasn’t come back. If you get a lot of heartburn try having a bit of milk with the lansoprazole until it kicks in. I’d push your GP for a scan as well to see if there’s anything more than that wrong.

brightpinkglitter · 19/04/2024 21:14

@OnNaturesCourse thank you so much for your reply.

Did you also get the fullness feeling after eating very little and the nausea?

I'm wondering if I maybe need to take more as I've been given lanzoprazole but it's just once a day. Is this the kind of thing that would need an endoscopy for them to do an investigation do you think? I hate the thought of those!!

I'm sorry for what you went through but I'm so glad you're feeling better. I'm going to stick to small amounts (not like I haven't been eating small amounts, I can't manage much more!) of bland food for a while I think x

@Computercalendar I had no idea about fennel tea, I'll stock up tomorrow!! Thank you! Did you feel really full after eating too?

I got this last year. I've never suffered from stomach problems, cast iron stomach. Then last year after taking ibuprofen for a couple of weeks for jaw pain I started feeling sick, stomach pain, eventually vomiting blood. I had an endoscopy and was diagnosed with gastritis.
Id say it took 4 months to clear. I took omeprozole and lived on a very bland diet. Since then it's reared up a couple of times. I can never eat chilli or curry again, or take ibuprofen but otherwise it's ok.

I should say I got bloods done to check my liver, kidneys etc etc. All fine.

Also a upper scan of liver and gallbladder. All fine.

Do definitely get checked out.

I would think you need more of the anti acids for sure as your stomach needs to heal.

OnNaturesCourse · 19/04/2024 21:50

@brightpinkglitter snd yes, unbelievably full after even a bite of toast some days. Ended every day with upper bloat too.

Justwingingit2005 · 19/04/2024 21:53

I had a virus, was popping ibruprofen daily for a few days. Then started with gut issues. Heartburn, tummy ache and general digestive discomfort. My Dr referred me for endoscopy. Found an ulcer from ibruprofen. Omeprazole 20mg twice a day for a while.
The endoscopy lady said ibruprofen etc shouldn't be taken without omeprazole. She said they are really damaging medicines for your tummy.

Curlywurlywurly · 19/04/2024 22:00

I previously had Helicobacter Pylori which has similar symptoms to yours OP. Since then I try to avoid taking ibuprofen unless absolutely necessary.

brightpinkglitter · 20/04/2024 10:06

Thanks everyone. It would make sense as I say as it follows me having taken ibroprofen for a week or so but my god, I've never felt so unwell.
It's just constant pains, then hunger pangs followed by me feeling uncomfortably full and nauseous for hours afterwards just for eating something like a bowl of cereal or half a jacket potato!! I hope it starts to get better soon Sad

My GP said that no-one over 60 should take ibuprofen without omeprazole. Unfortuately the GP I saw for jaw pain a few weeks early failed to mention that.
