Any dentist about?

I had a dental abscess that was drained in October last year.

I noticed a red dot on the gum and it was gently draining, very small and gently. I saw a dentist in March who x rayed again and it is the same abscess as before, as expected. She referred to the hospital to check if it’s him or tooth. I have no pain however the tooth it is above is root canal / crown around ten years ago.

i haven’t heard from the hospital and they don’t answer the phone.

it has stopped draining over the last couple of weeks although the small red circle remains. I am unsure as to how urgent this is. If anyone knows about this sort of thing please let me know your thoughts! Thank you

@Tuilipcity I wouldn't says it's urgent and it sounds like a draining sinus.

There are usually 2 reasons for an infection; the root canal treatment has failed or the tooth has cracked. It needs treatment- either extraction or the tooth needs retreatment if this is possible. Retreatment would be with an endodontist and in many areas is only available privately unless there is a locally commissioned NHS tier 2 or 3 service. You may have also been told it could be apicected this is only normally done after root treatment has been redone.

Does this sound similar to what you were told?

Thanks so much for your reply. Yes she said extraction or reroot privately. The dentist couldn’t be sure it wasn’t in the gum rather than the tooth and wanted this confirmed with the hospital.

I am not in any discomfort at all, which is great but am a bit concerned that the draining appears to have stopped.

@@Tuilipcity the drainage has stopped because currently you're immune system is managing it, it will keep happening until the tooth is retreated or extracted.

That is so reassuring. Thank you so much for your help.
