Skin tag on neck - can I remove it myself?

Hello all,

I have a small but persistent skin tag on the back of my neck. From time to time it swells up a bit (though it's still tiny), and then it goes down again. It doesn't ever go away, though.

It's so small and trivial that I've not considered bothering the GP with it, but I'd like to get rid of it if possible. I think it's too small for one of the bands that can be used, so I was wondering about a cream, but I've just read that it's not always a good idea to try home remedies.

Does anyone have any experience of this? Fingers crossed!

I've removed one myself but it never swelled up and hurt. In your shoes I'd want a doctor to confirm it's a skin tag.

I didn't know skin tags couod swell up & hurt.

If it is a skin tag you can tie thread round them but maybe speak to a pharmacist or GP just to check first

I’ve removed several skin tags on my neck using apple cider vinegar, it takes a week or so they dry out and drop off.

Mine would sometimes swell up and they’d be pretty sore when they did that, no idea why they would swell sometimes.

Thanks all. I'll ask a pharmacist to have a look, and I'll try the apple vinegar.

Yes I've also never heard of a skin tag swelling or hurting, they're usually painless so I'd have a professional check first that it definitely is one. In regards to removing, I removed one at home years ago by tying tooth floss around it tightly and then covering it with a plaster, it fell off within a matter of days.

No I don't think you should. I cut one off once from my eyebrow area with sharp scissors and it was fine if a bit bleedy. But yours might not be a skin tag.

Cookerhood · 19/04/2024 09:08

They sometimes swell up if they catch on something.
You can tie a piece of cotton around the base of them & they fall off, or I believe you can buy a kit. I've occasionally snipped off very tiny ones with sterilised scissors.
I would show it to the pharmacist, though.

BoobyDazzler · 19/04/2024 09:09

I had one on my face that I tied a hair round and it dropped off within a few days.

Devilsmommy · 19/04/2024 09:09

There's special freeze stuff you can use now for them, though I think you need to check it's definitely a skin tag first

Treaclewell · 19/04/2024 09:29

I used nail clippers, unsterilised, for one near my eye. No problems. I've some larger ones, brief discussion with GP on use of thread to cut off blood supply but they were too sensitive so I've left them.

notofsoundmind · 19/04/2024 09:53

I pull mine off, they bleed a little bit

Thatsthewayitisnt · 19/04/2024 10:06

Use tea tree oil on it. Use a drop of two each day twice a day until it shrivels up. I’ve done it and it always works.

FartSock5000 · 19/04/2024 12:14

Use the Skin Tag band system. Ebay and Amazon sell them. Its a tiny blue band and device to apply it. Works a treat!

I have PCOS and get a ton of skin tags. This kit removes them quickly and painlessly.

Shiveringinthecountry · 19/04/2024 22:18

Thanks again, all. I'll defo ask pharmacist to look on Monday, but in the meantime I've ordered tea tree oil 👍

@Thatsthewayitisnt @Afternoonsnooze

Hi both.. I've come back to thank you! I tried the cider vinegar the first two nights and the Tea Tree oil when it arrived the following day. The next morning the tag fell off in the shower! 😱

I've had this thing at least three years and I'm really thrilled that it's gone. Thank you both very much indeed FlowersFlowers

Get it professionally removed

Hedjwitch · 23/04/2024 20:04

I removed one on my neck by tying it really tightly with dental floss. Dropped off pretty quickly
