B12 Deficiency ????

Sorry bit of a long one....

Just wondering if someone can help or has any similar experiences. For the past few weeks I've felt really tired/not had much energy had a lot of headaches, heart palpitations, light headedness, nausea, feel extremely anxious and panicky (a lot more than normal and I think have been experiencing panic attacks) and forgetfulness. I've also noticed that when I get anxious my body but mainly my legs feel so weak. I sometimes even feel like im dying (I know that's dramatic not sure if this is anxiety related) I do suffer from health anxiety.

Everything that I've been reading online points to a vitamin d or b12 deficiency. Can they really cause symptoms this extreme?

I am slightly more stressed at the moment but was just wondering if anyone has any other ideas as to what could be causing these symptoms or have experienced anything similar?

I have had a blood test to test for vitamin d and b12 so am waiting for the results from that.

Thank you if you have read this far🙂🙂

Absolutely.

I was convinced I was going to be diagnosed with MS my B12 deficiency symptoms were so bad, & when my vitamin D was just a little low I was so bad I couldn’t remember my own phone number (amongst other things) and thought I was heading for early Alzheimer’s!
Did they test anything else? Low -ish iron can cause anxiety as well as some of the other symptoms you mention, as can thyroid issues.
Folate causes a few issues too if too low.

yes ditto on thinking I would be diagnosed with MS, or cancer when my B12 was low. It used to be a fatal condition 40 odd years ago before the solution was found.

get a proper blood test and go from there. Sometimes you will get B12 injections to do a turbo boost (which is what I had for 3 months) and then you just do topup supplements monitored by blood tests.

But there are many conditions that have similar symptoms so you need to make sure you get it diagnosed properly because you don't want to miss something more serious.

Thank you for your reply much appreciated. I asked for a full blood count too so I'm not sure if any of those that you mentioned fall under that

No. A full blood count is a separate test. You would need the specific tests to be requested.

My Pernicious Anemia was completely asymptomatic. Low B12 showed up on a routine blood panel then an Intrinsic Factor Antibody test came back positive. But absolutely zero symptoms.

What you're describing could be B12 related but could also be many other things. Good luck - hope they find out what's causing your symptoms, sounds very frustrating!

Jodesc · 18/04/2024 14:37

OK I will try and get another blood test to test for these as well. Thank you for your help 🙂🙂

I have chronic malnutrition and all my macro and micro nutrients with trace elements are tested every twelve weeks for life. It's amazing how bad low levels can make you feel, including an impending sense of doom.
It's not just common things like anaemia (I've had a Hb of 3 before requiring several units of blood and a week in hospital), I've also been admitted for a copper level of 2. There's a huge amount of minerals and vitamins that can be deficient, all capable of causing the symptoms you're experiencing.

LarkspurLane · 18/04/2024 14:46

What age are you?
Low oestrogen can cause these symptoms (although I am not sure about it coming on suddenly)

JlL2013 · 18/04/2024 15:03

Could also be low iron.

What's your diet like? Are you vegan/vegetarian?

Jodesc · 18/04/2024 15:37

No I'm not vegan or vegetarian. I personally think I eat quite a varied diet. It could be healthier in some areas but overall I don't think it's that bad

I just asked because it can be difficult to get sufficient levels of some nutrients when you eat a restrictive diet. B12 supplements are often recommended for vegans and vegetarians.

But as long as you eat a varied diet that's unlikely to be an issue.

I think you're going to have to wait for your blood test results to come back to at least rule out a few things (particularly any type of anemia).

Taking a particular type of birth control pill gave me many of those symptoms (years ago!) and switching to a different one resolved the problem. But honestly could be almost anything, even a virus.
