so what do you think happened, the mmr did not protect her? or cousin contracted measles before the mmr?
on the thur cousin came out in a viral rash due to the mmr apperntly accoreding to the drs but at the wekend they said she has measles

I would guess measles before MMR - I think it takes a while for the vaccine to kick in - although I'm not sure on the order in which they work, or what the ususal timescale are.

robinrednomorenowemptybreasts · 31/03/2008 14:44

it must be that or either the mmr takes quite a long time to form a protection

thanks for your opinion kif

she will have already contracted measles before the jab unluckily hope she is ok

WigWamBam · 31/03/2008 14:47

The incubation period for measles is about 10 days so she would have had it well before she had the immunisation.

prussell · 31/03/2008 14:48

it takes at least 10 days before the MMR kicks in and could affect the cousin so she must have had it before the jab - so unlucky. Poor cousin. Hope she gets better soon.

Lubyloo · 31/03/2008 14:49

There is an incubation period of one to two weeks for measles so she would already have been developing it and indeed infectious before the rash appeared.

How old is she? Is she very poorly? Hope she makes a speedy recovery.

Joash · 31/03/2008 14:52

I understood that immunisations give you a minor amount of what they're to prevent you getting - this enables your body to develop the immunity, so there is a small chance that you might actually contract the disease.

robinrednomorenowemptybreasts · 31/03/2008 15:10

she is only 13 months and she only had the mmr on thurday, prussell does it really take 0 days for the mmr to kick in? if so then she wasnt protected from the mmr.

poor little baby

hasn't she got the measled from the mmr? dd was very poorly and had a rash for about a fortnight after her mmr, i suppose if i'd taken her to the gp he'd have called it measles.

WigWamBam · 31/03/2008 15:14

But she wouldn't have been protected by the MMR anyway - she was already incubating measles when she had the MMR. It won't stop a child developing a disease they are already incubating and you are incubating measles for around 10 days before the spots come out.

Hope she feels better soon.

Aitch · 31/03/2008 15:14

(i was quite pleased, actually, the last thing i wanted was for her to go through the mmr and not have a reaction that would suggest she was getting immunity in this day and age with mmr rates dropping).

LarryVeestAdamAntSpawnChorus · 31/03/2008 15:24

Aitch - is that true? My DCs didn't have any reaction!

LarryVeestAdamAntSpawnChorus · 31/03/2008 15:25

Sorry Robin - I hope your cousin gets well soon. It sounds rotten for her!

robinrednomorenowemptybreasts · 31/03/2008 15:39

opps i ment dos the mmr take 0 days to kick in

im trying to find out more about it by serching the web. surely if it just a raction to the mmr the dr wouldnt of said she had measles

i have a 9 month old dd, who of course is not protected so ill have to keep her well away

OP posts:
Aitch · 31/03/2008 15:45

no i don't think it works like that, lar, sorry for panicking you. i just liked the fact that it was crystal clear for me that dd's body was reacting with the measles bit of the injection.

Hulababy · 31/03/2008 15:47

We thought DD had reacted to her first MMR. But we have since spoken to the doctors/consultant and they now think that she probably had measles - it was going round at the time she had it. Her "reaction" was about 2 days after having the MMR.

Yes, I see what you mean. I'll reduce my parental panic level back down to yellow
