DS is 8 months old and I posted recently about him having diarrhoea for the last week. I've posted many times about him being windy and farty in the past.

The thing is, and I don't think I'm imagining it, he's getting worse. A couple of months ago he'd be waking 2-3 times most nights, which was really fine by me, and it felt like progress. He'd just BF back to sleep, or if he had trapped wind some massage sorted it quickly.

Last night: Bed at half 7, took half an hour to settle, woke at 9 with a sore tummy, after half an hour was obviously not going to settle, I went to bed with him where he groaned and moaned for another half hour, woke at half 12, groaning and moaning and writhing and crying until around half 2, huge squirty poo and farts, cried and writhed for another half hour then asleep, woke briefly at 5 then up for day at 7, will only settle on his side in the crook of my arm with me patting his bum.

That's fairly representative of most nights in the last month. I'm back to pretty much FT work now too, and totally exhausted. I've had one 5 hour and a few 4 hour stretches of sleep since he was born, otherwise 2 and 3 hour chunks every night. He's now painful during the daytime too, and massage isn't working as his tummy is too hard and sore and he stiffens his legs so I can't bicycle them. Due to his constant wind and crappy sleep I've tried Infacol, Colief, Dentinox, gripe water, fennel tea, chamomile tea, dairy free, gluten free, caffeine free, cranial osteopathy, tilting the cot, tummy sleeping, side sleeping, you name it.

We've got a doctor's appointment tomorrow but I am fairly sure we'll be told he'll grow out of it. I've been told this repeatedly since he was born and it's wearing thin, especially as things seem to be worsening. I'm sooooo tired, but worst is having to see him crying and writhing in pain with a tummy like a drum and being unable to help him. Most advice seems aimed at burps, which aren't the problem - it's like milk and food is fermenting in his gut and creating loads of wind.

I'm just hoping for an an answer, doubt it exists though

Poor little thing. I have no knowledge of this, except that my friend's DD had bad constipation and stomach pain for several years from babyhood. When she eventually got her tested by some kind of biopsy under GA (she's a GP, so maybe can get through the system better) it was found to be dairy intolerence or allergy, I'm not sure which.

Omly other thing, and you'll know if this is a possibility or not, there are a lot of tummy bugs around at the moment, and the runny poos can last for a long time after that. If it's just this week he's been worse it might improve again...?

Has his diet changed in the last month?

Could you go back to basics and see if he improves then gradually introduce new foods to see what the problem is?

Fermenting -makes yeast spring to mind btw, does he have yeast in his diet ?Bread, marmite, cheese?

I cannot remember what a normal 8 mos old eats I'm afraid. But hoping someone more knowledgeable comes along , you must be so exhausted you poor thing.

Sorry things aren't improving Rose . Could you push for a referral to a specialist?

Well, his diet is really varied - everything's new at this age! We're doing BLW though so I guess it's possible his intake has increased enough to cause a problem, and he does get bread and cheese in some form most days.

I thought the diarrhoea was just a bug and it seemed to resolve yesterday but came back with added kick in the night.

Hi EP - hope you and yours are well, and you are enjoying much rest

I'll see what the doc says tomorrow. We're going to be videoed for training so I'd better not be tired and short-tempered, huh?

The tummy bugs can come back like that, by the way. If he's had a tummy bug it can lead to an inability to digets milk until the bacteria build up again, but your GP can advise about that. TBH neither of mine have had that much pain from a tummy bug though.

might be worth trying probiotics, you can get stuff suitable for babies
