What is this bony lump on collarbone?

Massive worrier here so please be gentle.

I’ve noticed a really hard bony lump on my collarbone - it’s near my sternoclavicular joint. It doesn’t hurt at all and it really feels like bone. DH thinks it feels the same as the other side of my collar bone but I don’t.

I know I need to see a GP but does anyone have any experience of something similar?

Picture?

Namechangerooney1 · 17/04/2024 20:29

You can’t see it - I can only feel it.

Hi, if you don't mind me asking, what did your GP say/results? I'm experiencing very similar circumstances and waiting to have an x-ray. Thank you 😊

I’ve not got an appointment till tomorrow. Sorry to hear that - is your lump in the same place as mine?

Hi both, I have the same issue now waiting in CT. Can I ask what your outcome was? The ultrasound showed calcification but not conclusive @Namechangerooney1 @Onceuponamama thanks

What was the outcome of your CT @Sarahdaydreamer1234
I have a similar thing...the end of my collarbone on one side feels more bony/pronounced that the other side...I'm seeing the GP in a few days

Hi everyone, it turned out to be nothing serious, normal bone structure for some people :)

Long version, I saw the GP and explained, she felt my bones and could see it was more pronounced on one side. Sent me for an xray to put my mind at ease. As soon as I had the xray the first lady took the results to a back room. This worried me, but then a doctor came out shortly after and told me it was all totally normal, no growths or anything to be concerned with. I think some people just have asymmetrical bones. Try not to be worried and see your GP to get it looked at. :)

Mine was some sort of bone too! Nothing to worry about.

Immo8 · 25/01/2025 08:32

Went to my GP...she told me it was just my collarbone! I felt a tad embarrassed lol. One side was just more pronounced

Bless you! We get a lot of people bringing their kids to children’s A&E worried about “strange lumps” in their throat. Tonsils. Or the epiglottis. It’s never actually a strange lump.

Sorry to resurrect this thread, but I have something similar sounding.

The end of my right collarbone near my throat on the sternoclavicular joint seems to have an extra bump on the end of it. That side seems generally bigger anyway and the bone in front of it seems a bit worn away and jagged. I noticed it about a year ago and mentioned it to my GP who said it felt normal to her. However, I'm not sure was feeling in the right place - you have to feel in the hollow between the collarbones, she only felt around the front/outside. Sometimes you can hardly feel the difference, it depends on my position/posture. She did say if I was that worried to come back and she would send for an xray but I've avoided doing so as I have health anxiety and don't want to feed it. Instead I have tried to forget about it but every so often I start worrying about it again.

Googling tells me that anything sinister in that area is extremely rare and asymmetry is very common with that joint. Safe to ignore, given as its not changed in the year since I noticed it and doesn't hurt?

I’ve just noticed I have this too, and like you that side seems a bit more pronounced than the other in general. I also have horrible health anxiety, it was comforting to find this thread and see this can be normal. I’ve got a GP appt coming up for a routine matter so will see what they say.

Worridoncemore · 17/03/2025 07:37

Yes I'm hoping it's a normal variation, especially as on my dominant side which would've suffered far more wear and tear than the other!

Itsalljustinmyhead · 17/03/2025 07:41

Sounds like there’s a good chance it could be. Mine is exactly as you describe, and you can’t see it only feel it, so hard to know if it’s been there forever and I just didn’t notice until now. Hopefully GP will say normal variation.

Worridoncemore · 17/03/2025 08:42

Oh yes, do let me know what they say. Feel a bit silly going back to mine as it's not a place you would normally poke around at. Chances are it has been like that forever and we never noticed!
