Recommendations for getting fit at home

Over this horrid wet winter I've become a massively unfit slob. I need to find a way to exercise at home - while looking after two smallish children - which doesn't cost me very much.
Does anyone have suggestions for fitness videos on YouTube or free workout apps? Or maybe low cost exercise equipment that has helped with strength in arms, legs and abdomen?
I used to be fit. I used to run half marathons. Now my fitness seems to come behind everyone else's needs! Thanks in advance mums!

I am a convert to the home workout! For sessions I use:
Joe Wicks YouTube (free)
Own Your Goals Davina McCall (paid)
Yoga with Kassandra YouTube (free)

For inexpensive equipment I recommend starting with:
Exercise mat
Weighted gloves
Sliders
Resistance band

If you have space and can afford it, a set of handweights is also good - I have 2kg - 6kg ones

I really like Own Your Goals because you can select either a challenge of grouped workouts or individual ones. They range from 10 mins to about 45mins so you can decide how much time you have a choose accordingly. I am a firm believer that "something is better than nothing" so even if you don't have a lot of time, doing a short workout will still make you feel better.

Caroline Girvan or Lift with Cee. Just need a mat and a few dumbbells!

I've actually found the paid Joe Wicks app to be very good - it's about £70 a year so much cheaper than the gym but the structure of the workouts and cycles meant that I could see my progress much more than when I had just been picking random free ones off YouTube.

For beginners, older and/or unfit; Lucy Wyndham Read. She is really lovely and gentil, and her workouts are very short, so you can do 2 or 3 to begin with and 'work your way up' to her Thighs & Glutes workout, which is VERY effective.

For intermediates, and those who are prepared to challenge themselves: there's LOADS, including Heather Robertson. Sydney Cummings, Rebecca Louise, Popsugar Fitness........

Also Growingannanas (more HIIT/cardio based), though some of her workouts also use dumbbells. Her workouts are very well structured. I like the fact that she doesn't talk. Some online trainers chatter constantly, which can be so annoying you have to turn the sound off. (I'm looking at you, Rebecca!)

But the very best is Caroline Girvan. She uses quite heavy dumbbells and her workouts are challenging - but very effective, rewarding and - for many - quite addictive. What I like is that she has several series which are incredibly professional and well thought out, targeting different body parts on different days.

I particularly like Caroline's EPIC Heat. Tip: Start slow and low, pace yourself, substitute as necessary if it's too tough. I've been doing her programmes for about 5 years and I'm now superfit. And I truly enjoy it. [NB: im 70...]

I like Bodyfit by Amy, it's non-pressured but you get a good workout and she has a massive range of videos - all free.

I have some dumbbells and a mat, sometimes add in a ball or bands but prefer dumbbells or bodyweight. I now have a strong core which is amazing!

PaminaMozart · 17/04/2024 09:21

Gentle, not gentil...!!! (Re. Lucy)

LongCareerOfNearMisses · 17/04/2024 09:22

I also can't stand people yakking on but also don't want just silence. Amy is a good balance, always telling you good form cues.

A strong core is indeed amazing - and improves one's capability to exercise and overall fitness tremendously.

I do the Bowflex 3-minute plank every single day and I'd highly recommend it. [ unless I'm doing Caroline Girvan's 15 minute plank workout...]

I turn down the volume - just enough that I can still hear the beeps. And listen to the radio, which makes the whole experience of working out so much more enjoyable.

Any one tried Wall Pilates ? That seems to be everywhere atm

Bluebells81 · 17/04/2024 11:34

The Body Project. Lots of free content plus more for subscription. Husband and wife, lots of low impact, different levels, fun to watch.

Take a look at the FitOn app. I've been using it for years - so much content on there! Not sure if there is still a free version but I started with that and now use the paid version which is £30 per year. Absolutely love it!
