Hi, Im booked for an endoscopy and I’m honestly so scared I’ve stupidly read some horror stories and now I’m feeling awful about it. Anyone who has had sedation were you completely out? I’d like to be unaware but don’t think that’s the case 😫

I won't sugar coat.. it's horrid. But it's over in 5 mins, the sedative keeps you calm. Mine found a stomach ulcer which I got medication for and recovered so it's really worth it. Big girl pants, you can do this x

Tigertigertigertiger · 16/04/2024 22:15

I had it , was absolutely fine.

Whatevershallidowithmylife · 16/04/2024 22:16

I had it - absolutely fine with sedation. Would rather have that than a filling tbh!

LunaFortuna · 16/04/2024 22:18

I was terrified of it but the sedation was great, don’t remember a thing and wouldn’t be worried now if I had to do it again.

Allthegoodnamesaregone1 · 16/04/2024 22:20

I had it without sedation as I wanted to drive home.
It wasn't fun, quite uncomfortable but it is what it is and it's over quickly.
I also had my diagnosis there and the while the tube was still inside. Which was the greatest moment ever. Made the entire process worth it

Zeusee1 · 16/04/2024 22:20

Thank you everyone. How was the gagging?

Ginflinger · 16/04/2024 22:20

Had sedation and it was a breeze. Was awake and faintly aware of what was happening but not distressed or bothered at all. Good luck!

Thank you everyone. How was the gagging?

Yea there's gagging and it was forceful but they're professionals and literally deal with it every day.

RollOnSpringDays · 16/04/2024 22:22

I had maximum sedation last time and remember nothing. The time before I didn’t have as much sedation and remembered it all. Just insist on the most they can give you and you will be fine.

SpikeWithoutASoul · 16/04/2024 22:23

I am such a wimp and was absolutely dreading it. Had the sedation and it was a breeze. Sedation wore off quickly and didn’t make me feel odd.

Freesia9 · 16/04/2024 22:28

The sedation knocked me out, so was better than dentist for sure!

Rollerboots · 16/04/2024 22:29

Hi, 90% of people who have an endoscopy manage absolutely fine, they just don’t talk about it!
Ask for the sedation and throat spray, the two work really well together.
The sedation should take the edge of your nerves, some people don’t remember anything, but most will be aware. It’s concious sedation, so the aim isn’t to knock you out .
The spray will make your throat nice and numb, like an injection at the dentist. Be prepared for a feeling of pressure when the camera is at the back of your throat, you might gag a bit, most people do, but it will pass really quickly once the camera is down into your oesophagus , and you can breath normally the whole time. A bit of burping is normal. The endoscopist or the nurse at your head should be able to reassure you about what’s happening, it really will be over in around 5 mins.
Best of luck!

I had one a year ago and was absolutely crapping myself. I had the sedation but didn't find it kicked in so was very much aware. However it was done so quickly it wasn't as bad as expected. Yeah I gagged and it wasn't pleasant but it was in my throat for no more than 2 mins. I just tried to breathe through my nose.

Zeusee1 · 16/04/2024 22:20

Thank you everyone. How was the gagging?

if you take sedation, you wont know its happen

I'm one of the few that dont take sedation but a local spray - has one a few weeks ago - the reason i dont go for sedation is that you are there for longer

dont worry OP they will look after you and i find having my forehead brushed by by the nusres hand like you do to a dog, very comforting - honestly, no joke because I'm awake and its so comforting

Anyone had one recently and had bipoises, how long before the results for the biopises, please?

Zeusee1 · 16/04/2024 22:47

Thank you for all the replies I’ve found them really helpful :) 💗

I had sedation. No gagging at all and don't remember any of it. Was actually surprisingly relaxing 😆

Titsywoo · 16/04/2024 22:51

@DistinguishedSocialCommentator I didn't get biopsy results until my follow up 6 weeks later but I assume they would have called earlier if there were issues

I’ve had two and I was sedated and unaware. Was nervous as I have a strong gag reflex, but it was fine. I don’t think I would’ve tolerated being awake.

notofsoundmind · 17/04/2024 09:27

I had it without sedation as I had a colonoscopy previously and the sedation did not work on me at all, so I thought it would be pointless,

I had the throat spray though to stop gagging

I will not lie, it was bloody hideous, it only lasted about 2 minutes though, I was gagging could feel my stomach heaving to expel the probe and had tears streaming down my face, and I could feel it moving inside me, very strange.

The nurse with me was very good and kept me still and calm, just had to grin and bear it, literally😂

addictedtotheflats · 17/04/2024 10:23

I didn't have sedation and whilst uncomfortable it wasn't horrendous. I wouldn't be scared to have another one

theladylovescupcakes · 17/04/2024 18:42

I had one last month and I was absolutely bricking it, to the point that on two occasions whilst at the hospital I almost pulled the plug and called it off.

I had the throat spray and sedation, and while I gagged a few times I wasn't remotely worried about it, just relaxed and let it happen. Then I almost really didn't know what was going on after that. Came round quickly and felt good that I'd managed to go through it, after being so worried.
