Brown urine in 16mth old after sickness bug

devonsmummy · 31/03/2008 09:07

DS has had sickness bug since Thursday evening. Took him to out of hours early Sat morning and got rehydration powders. he has been slowly taking water with these and bf on Sat & Sun.

during this time his nappies were virtually dry.

Since yesterday his nappies are wetter but the urine looks dark brown.

is this indicating he's still dehydrated?

yes,his urine is concentrated, but it is a good sign that he is actually passing urine, you just need to bump his fluids a bit.

devonsmummy · 31/03/2008 09:12

thanks ggirl,

for some reason he is reluctant to take any water today - he is a poor drinker at the best of times so gonna have a battle to try and get him to take more.

if he won't drink much water, breastfeed lots and maybe try making some ice lollies with very diluted juice.

devonsmummy · 31/03/2008 09:55

thanks miomao

will bf as seems this is what he wants

well the brown urine has gone but DS has VERY bad bum now.

He is breast feeding but refusing any other drinks so I'm syringing Dyralite into him (orally).

He has asked for food but either pretends to eat it or gets it in his mouth then spits it out.

Shall I just carry on as I am?

keep breastfeeding as its a good way to keep him hydrated but i would keep an eye out for less than 4 wet nappies in 24 hours or if he seems dissoriented also keep an eye on the inside of his mouth and lip if it seem dry then he may be dehydrated and you need to get him to a doctor. if he will take little sips of water or diluted juice that is good too but I wouldn't worry too much about him being off solids as he may just be off his food as he is poorly its the fluid intake that really important. hth

devonsmummy · 01/04/2008 15:59

thanks yaz -

everyone i've spoken to (non breastfeeders) have said stop bf as this could be upsetting his tummy.
I haven't followed their advise

Can you try some weak lukewarm cammomile tea with honey? That is less harsh on the stomach that straight water and they seems to enjoy the taste more - the warm temp makes it easier to digest.

i wouldn't stop BF at all

yaz2 · 02/04/2008 06:53

i would definately not stop breatfeeding him it is the most natural thing in the world for him to want and he will still be getting a smaal amount of some antibodies from you so that can only help him recover!!!! there is no harm in other fluids but noting else is manufactured specifically to meet his needs as well as bf.

devonsmummy · 02/04/2008 13:29

Well he was sick in the night again and still has really bad tummy.

I'm guessing that him not eating properly since last Thursday and just breastfeeding is someway responsible for this.

Poor little man, he screamed in pain as he went earlier so have made an appointment at the docs for this afternoon.

Still bf - yesterday it seemed like I only had a 10 minute break!! It's like having a newborn again.

At the beginning of last week whilst on hols I'd managed to cut feeds to x1 morning and x2 evening ......oh well anything to help him get better

devonsmummy · 02/04/2008 14:40

don't have any cam tea and didn't fancy taking him out yesterday , so no haven't tried it.

When I pop out to docs later I'll pick some up and give it a go.
Thanks CWE

This happened with my ds last month - when I took him back to the gp's she told me to take him straight to a&e as he was very dehydrated. They put an iv line in, and gave him a bolus (?) of saline, straight into his vein. Horrible and scary, but within an hour he was so much better. They tested his poo - he had rotavirus. They told me not to give him any milk, just water with diarolyte.
He hadn't wee'd at all in 12 hours, and had diarrhoea (poor little thing). It took about 10 days for him to get back to 'normal'.
Hope your ds is better soon.

devonsmummy · 02/04/2008 14:56

The dr at out of hours said he could either have dyrolite or be admitted for IV.

The milk thing would be a problem as he's breastfed and that is all he will drink at the moment.

God I hope he doesn't end up in hospital!!

Glad your little one is better Twirly xx

my 4 year old had the rotavirus which causes vomiting and diarrhoea late last year it was really nasty he also ended up in hospital for the night with a fluid iv as he had become so dehydrated but it worked really quickly and coming to think of it they did tel me not to give him any milk either I am not sure if that would still be the case with bf but its worth checking with the doc just to be safe. I was really lucky that my then 14 month old did not catch it as they share a room and the doc in the hospital said it was very likely that the bf actually played a role in r=protecting ds2 from the virus. i really hope you little boy is feeling better soon.

devonsmummy · 02/04/2008 15:04

Thanks Yaz

strange thing is DS got it while on holiday with a friends little boy (who's 3 mths older) and he was only sick for the day.

We took them swimming and while in pool a girl was sick so pool was evacuated.
