After a long 8 days of having a blocked right ear I went to the chemist today and had it suctioned anyway the chemist said they couldn't get it all out and to continue to use olive oil drops for another 3 days and return for a second go is this normal last time i had this done it cleared first time now I'm freaking out 😳

@Queenfierce I'd definitely go to Specsavers and have another go, with the camera they can see if there's a build up etc and like I say they are trained audiologists. I think I'd trust them a bit more than the chemist. My GP did a referral and I was done in less than 24 hours.

Otex can work wonders, but it needs to be the orange one aka Otex Express. I’ve used half a bottle in one evening to get stubborn wax to shift.

The Chemist already said that their was a build up of wax which they removed and some very hard wax that they couldn't get to

Unfortunately I can't afford £60 right now

We’ve stopped using Olive Oil and Otex. We now use Bicarbonate of Soda drops from the chemist. (Chance recommendation from an ENT consultant)
really seems far more effective in softening wax.

hi, hope you get it sorted. just came on to say that my son (11) had to have a huge amount of ear wax removed under anaesthetic this year.
The nurse on the ward said they don't do syringing anymore as there is too much risk of damage to the ear drum. So it was manual extraction for him, as ear drops hadn't worked (there was just too much I think).

The chemist - one of the Otex bottles is bicarb rather than olive oil.

Someone back up the tread mentioned about your Eustachian tube possibly being blocked. My son had this behind his eardrum it wasn't draining properly and this was why his hearing was poor. He had no wax. I think you need to make an appointment with the Dr to investigate further.

Unfortunately its literally impossible to get a appointment at my gp it was definitely wax before
The chemist did say it could take 1 2 days for the pressure to release so will wait and see what happens over the weekend

Sorry to hear that 😢 Could be it's a middle ear thing. I had a terrible chest infection (like somebody upthread) a couple of years ago and was completely deaf for ages. Nothing helped. I booked in with audiologist and was amazed and disappointed to find there was no wax. Over time my hearing gradually returned. I was told it was a middle ear problem.

Fabvegetablegrower · 19/04/2024 23:02

I understand it is impossible to get an appointment urgently with the GP here too. My sons hearing did improve as the fluid gradually drained from behind his ear drum down the Eustachian tube. If you have a cold or an allergy to pollen this can also cause the tube to become blocked. We could see the fluid behind the drum with the camera the audiologist used.

It really is frustrating wow 3 months you poor person that must have been horrific for you I have already had enough of it 😳

Yeah it was terrible I genuinely thought it was permanent.

Queenfierce · 20/04/2024 00:38

Hurray my hearing has finally started to clear I no longer feel completely deaf and beginning to think the chemist was right even know i convinced myself I was going deaf !!

I had this 2 weeks ago. It was a middle ear infection and the Eustachian tube was blocked with fluid. I was also I took a course of antibiotics for a week and no improvement. A friend advised me to go to a and e which I did. I was so worried it was permanent. He prescribed another week of the same antibiotics and it gradually cleared within ten days or so. Keep the faith.
