Ds has temp and cold last week .
Yest i noticed what i thought were a couple of bites on his shoulder blade.I put some aloe wera on and didnt check until tonight. Now he has a definate line along the nerve path of fluid filled blisters. I have seen shingles quite a few times and am fairly sure its that. Hes also been in contact with chickenpox recently.
He just seems awfully young-should i watch for anything and will he need any special treatment.
He actually has an asthma check early in the morning so will get him checked out anyway.

Has he had chicken pox? Because it can only be shingles if he's already had chicken pox.

It does sound like shingles, though ... hope you can get an answer tomorrow.

LaylaandSethsmum · 30/03/2008 22:55

He would need to have had chicken pox itself before if it is shingles, if he has it does sound shingly.

Sometimes GP will give antivirals meds but only if its caught at the very beginning.

fakeblonde · 30/03/2008 22:57

Hi
Yes he had chickenpox when he was 6 weeks old.
I was proudly boasting how he wouldn`t get it as i was breastfeeding (all around seemed to have it ) and hey ho he was covered !

Could well be then.

Although his recent contact with chicken pox won't be what's set it off; you can't "catch" shingles from someone with chicken pox.

fakeblonde · 30/03/2008 23:01

Well i just googles and apparrently children are only likey to get it if exposed to chickenpox in first year of life.
Seems more likely-bum

dd2 had it when she was 5, she had cp at 10 weeks old

she was in loads of pain, but i think it depends on the area the shingles appear (hers was inbetween her shoulder blades)

i found zovirax helped a lot

IdrisTheDragon · 30/03/2008 23:41

I didn't realise that about children being likely to get shingles if they have chicken pox in the first year of life. DD had chicken pox when she was 6 weeks old.

Tiggiwinkle · 30/03/2008 23:45

My DS4 had it last year when he was 13. I remember reading at the time that children are much more likely to get shingles if they have chicken pox before the age of one year. My DS was given a course of antiviral tablets and had very little pain.

Christywhisty · 31/03/2008 01:07

thats interesting because dd has chicken pox when she was about 13 months not under 1 but not far off.
When she was about 8 she had a patch of little blisters on the front of her pubic area. At the time I thought it may be shingles, but thought she was probably a bit young.

jabberwocky · 31/03/2008 01:18

The meds for shingles are best if started quite early on so I would try to get him into the docs tomorrow. Poor little guy...

fakeblonde · 31/03/2008 20:29

Yep it was shingles and he is on anti virals.
he`s ok at the mo but woke up quite poorly.Really pale and cuddly and complaining of pain.Have kept up a strict schedule of calpol and brufen and hes ok at the mo.
Reassurring tho to here of others who have had it so young-thanks.

Fb - glad he has been seen and treated. DS2 also had it age four - he had previusly had chicken pox at 3 weeks ( caught form older brother, evn tho' he was been fully nreastfed and I have had chicken pox. he was given anti-viral ( in France) - I was told by my English GP they don't normally give ant-virals in UK. He aslo had a pain in his arm which is apparently typical. he was poorly for a couple of days like your DS, but perked up on the fourth day when he had a hallowe'en party and fully recovered snd full of beans next day.
If it is any consolation, that was four years ago and we have not had a recurrence yet.

fakeblonde · 31/03/2008 21:03

Thanks for that.
Its his arm also that hurts-he has the rash on his rihjt shoulder thro to under his arm.

Can that happen then-can they get it again ?

OP posts:
jabberwocky · 31/03/2008 23:47

Yes, it can reoccur. There is a vaccination against shingles. Zostrix? I think? It was originally approved for patients over 65 as that is the main population for shingles but the last I read it was in testing/trials for wider approval. You may want to keep tabs on that.

Earthymama · 31/03/2008 23:53

Give him a cwtch from me, I had shingles in October, it was awful.

I am many years older than your little one, though so hopefully he'll bounce back like children usualy do.
