Hi!!

This is my second time posting but I’m driving myself mental with worry. Excuse that piece of food I can’t seem to flush out, does this look like dry socket? I woke up to a dull ache in socket but it’s only occasionally e.g. I bite down.

Please, any advice would be appreciated. I smoke but don’t drink.

If you had dry socket you would know all about it as it’s excruciating.

Bodyshame1980 · 14/04/2024 19:48

Dry socket is the worse pain in the world - you’d know

mlc0 · 14/04/2024 19:58

No it's not, you'd know if it was. Worst pain in the world

BringMeSunshineAllDayLong · 14/04/2024 20:01

I had dry socket it was horrible but not the worst pain ever. Do not smoke that will make it 100 times worse. Get hypnotised tomorrow and just stop! Gargle with salt every few hours

fourelementary · 14/04/2024 20:01

As others have said- there is no doubt when you have it!!! Agony.

If it’s only wen u bite down/occasionally you don’t have a dry socket. I had one and it is absolutely excruciating. My whole side of my face as throbbing right up to my ear and eye socket. I was sobbing with the pain and 7.5 month pregnant so couldn’t even take decent pain relief. It was horrific. I felt like smashing my own head off the wall ! I went to emergency dentist and got it flushed out and packed with special dressing… such a relief…, £150 tho which was another sore blow

KeenOtter · 14/04/2024 20:42

How long ago was your extraction?

DrSpartacular · 14/04/2024 20:46

Based on your description it's not dry socket, but if you're smoking you're increasing your risk of it.

Blueberryancakes · 14/04/2024 21:36

I’ve had dry socket, wasn’t the worst pain for me just are very dull ache. I went back to the dentist and he packed it with this clove smelling material and I was fine. Give the dentist a call

Seaoftroubles · 15/04/2024 10:51

I doubt it's a dry socket based on what you've written. If you're still rinsing with salty water (as is usually advised) be careful not to spit out, just let the water trickle out. Also don't smoke, as a pp said that increases risk.

I've had dry socket and agree with previous posters who've said it's a terrible pain and you'd know if you had it. That's lucky, as it's not possible for addicts to just stop smoking. I found oil of cloves helped a lot, despite the disgusting taste. It was the only thing that helped. You can get it from the chemist, soak it into a cotton wood bud and dab it onto the socket. (That's what worked for me, anyway). Good luck, and I hope the pain is soon gone.

Well I’ve given birth twice and I’d rather do that ten more times then have a dry socket. I’ve also broken a bones in a parachuting accident and I’d rather do that than have the pain of a dry socket. Debilitating!!
