Is this Gastro-Entiritis...?

Last Saturday we visited some relatives who said (just before we went home! Grrr) that they all had a stomach-bug. My son (4) played all afternoon with their son. The next day they rang us to say they'd been to the Dr who said they all had G-E.

The next day, my son started having very runny poos, and he was sick. That was Monday. Since then, he's had very runny poos, but not very often -- he still only does one poo a day, it's just very runny. And twice he has woken up in the middle of the night and thrown up in bed.

Is that gastro-entiritis? I thought GE would mean he had loads of poos, and lots of sickness? This is weird.

He's a bit off his food, and slightly more tired than normal, but not very. I've kept him off school, but when we're at home, he seems OK.

Last night he wasn't sick, but today he still has the runny poo and is burping a lot, and they smell like the acidic sick.

What should I do? Feed him? Not feed him? Give him juice or milk?

I will take him to the DR tomorrow. I haven't bothered to yet as I thought thry'd just tell me to give him lots of fluids & rest.

Any advice would be fab.

DS1 had a severe bout of GE a few years ago, he was in and out of hospital with it, and was certainly more than one poo a day (think more like one every 10-20 minutes!).

I think, as you say, the main thing to watch for him getting dehydrated, so yes lots of juice, not sugar free, and if you think he is getting dehydrated, add a tea spoon of sugar to it (how gross is that?!!) and obviously seek medical advice.

I would take him to the doctors tomorrow, to be on the safe side.

Thanks... That's what I thought. G-E would be almost constant diahorrea (sp) and frequent vomiting, wouldn't it?

I'll do the sugar water now -- thanks.

Take him to the doctors. It has been a week - chances are that the minute you set foot in the doctors he will be better. Always happened to me when mine where small - these poo bugs always last a week.

I would feed him plain things if he is hungry (toast etc) but if he doesn't want to don't force him. The important thing is the fluids.

Hope he feels better soon.

How is he now?

Aww, thanks so much for asking! He's fine. Yesterday we had the breakthrough moment when he finally had a lumpy poo! So he's back at school today. And last night, I got it. Hurled all over the bathroom at 3am! Hoping I lose 7lbs...

Thanks for all your advice, girls. This place is so soothing & helpful.

Awwww good bless him, I still remember even now the feeling when DS1 had his first lumpy poo after he was poorly I rang my mum to tell her

Poor you though, well done for looking on the bright side! Nothing like using a tummy bug to lose those extra few pounds!!
