Discectomy with a young baby

I'm 34, have had awful back pain for over a year, during which I was pregnant mostly. Now no longer pregnant, I had MRIs done, which show a very badly prolapsed disc, one of the worst the consultant tells me she has ever seen.
A large fragment of this disc is sat in my spinal canal. Consultant says the state of the disc & fragment together makes me very at risk of developing Cauda Equina syndrome.

She said if I didn't lift anything for 4-6 months, the body will reabsorb it. (Not sure if this relates to the disc, the fragment or both)
However, I have a HEAVY 9 month old. I cannot not lift her or carry her.

Consultant said surgery is available. However I'm not sure within the op if they remove the fragment & do anything with the disc, if doing this decreases my chances of the syndrome happening... tbh it was so much to take in at the time I have more questions now than before. I wanted to go away & have a think about my options before committing to surgery.

I just wonder if anyone had had the op done, and how it went. Or not, & if things improved over time.

TIA x

I had a microdisectomy done three years ago. I cannot recommend it highly enough. It was keyhole surgery to remove a piece of disc from the sciatic nerve. After waking up from the surgery I had no pain and could stretch my leg for the first time in months. I had to lie on my back for a week and do very simple physio. If your consultant recommends you need it, go for it.
