ADVICE NEEDED: Lump in baby's groin

Shhhh · 30/03/2008 16:36

Dh is just changing ds's nappy and has noticed in his groin (lay down on couch and when legs are down its the bit where his legs meet his body iykwim a lump.

Its more prominant on ds's right side and feels like a hard lump......

Advice would be appreciated. Is this normal or should I book him into gp to be safe tomorrow..?

Dispite ds being full of a cold (been nearly 2 weeks..) he seems ok....

TIA X

It could be a lymph node and there because he's had a virus, how big is it?
Prob best to get it checked if still there tomorrow

Off to the docs with you, could be an inguinal hernia.

Does it appear and disappear? Does it 'throb' visibly when DS is crying?

DS2 had one, corrected by surgery at 12 wks

Not looked at it when ds has been crying and it is about the size of a 5p.

DH just told me its been there for a few days......

I dont know about this in babies but I know my dh had lump and was told by doctor it was just a gland that comes up when you've been ill ect. Another person was worried on mn once and I told her the same. Her doctor later confirmed it was a gland also so I would not overly worry yourself but I would still have it checked because its your little baby and to be on the safe side x

thanks chloesmum...I have had a look tonight when getting ds ready for bed and you can't see it when he is lay flat YET when you can see it is when he is lay flat BUT she legs are haing down iykwim..over a couch or change table...

This is why dh has noticed and I haven't..... will speak to our gp tomorrow.x

just to update...spoke to gp yesterday who said although no emergency, he wanted to see him.

So after the appointment today he thinks its a swollen gland BUT wants a 2nd opinion so has referred us to see a paediatrician. We have a private appointment on thursday (NHS emergency appointment/referral was 4 weeks away .)

Im a bit concerned now as I expected the gp to look and say "nothing to worry about". BUT I am now worried. Given ds history since birth 12 months ago its been hospital visits after hospital visits and im now getting scared again...

shhhh, my little boy had exactly the same thing, coupled with a fairly low weight....we saw the paed and they gave us the all clear....

his were noticably raised at about 8 months or so, and are still there at 20 months.

they are lymph nodes and can be raised because they are fighting infection.... im my ds case, hes a skinny little fella who simply has prominant nodes.....

good luck...i'm sure its nothing to worry overly about. x

thanks mo and bb. I collected the referral letter from my gp today ready for tomorrows appointment....I read it as I wanted to see what he thought (just wondered if he didn't tell me his exact thoughts iykwim..Im a born worrier..)

Seems he just wants a 2nd opinion in case its a hernia. TBH im a bit more settled that the gp thinks its either a raised gland or hernia iykwim..as I was thinking worse things...

DS seems "normal", just still got remains of a cold from the last 2/3 weeks. Given his condition from birth (hirschsprungs disease) he isn't that big although is not small..... Compared thought to dd at this age he's a smaller and lighter frame...

will update you all tomorrow. x
