DVT injection in stomach?

DustyLee123 · 11/04/2024 07:30

A friends DM has been admitted with a DVT, had an injection in her stomach, but she doesn’t know what it was. Staff were run off their feet so she didn’t feel she could ask. What might it have been?

Dalteparin (Fragmin).

MrTiddlesTheCat · 11/04/2024 07:33

I was given Fragmin as an injection into the stomach to prevent blood clots after surgery. It's a blood thinner.

Killerqueenie · 11/04/2024 07:33

It will have been an anticoagulant to thin the blood.

Sagaris · 11/04/2024 07:33

Some sort of blood thinner. Happened to me about 18 months ago, I was admitted as the DVT had broken up and migrated to both lungs. I'm on blood thinners for life now.

ChocHotolate · 11/04/2024 07:33

It would have been a "blood thinning" medication to reduce the ability of her blood to form clots

DustyLee123 · 11/04/2024 07:34

How often will she have them and for how long? Thanks

It'll be blood thinners.

I had to inject myself for 7 days after my hysterectomy and they did first one in hospital. (I was in and out same day)

I didn't have a DVT. This was preventative.

May have to have treatment longer for actual DVT.

DustyLee123 · 11/04/2024 07:38

She knows it’s blood thinners, she just wondered if there’s a certain one for DVT/PE.

Ages ago now, but I had that one in the stomach in A&E ‘Majors’, then Clexane injections for ?10 days (also abdominal), some of which I did at home once I’d escaped the hospital, followed by 6 months on Warfarin tablets. Plus multiple blood tests.

All these drugs are blood thinners. I had DVT and PE. Nearly died of it.

I think Warfarin has now been replaced with a better drug so not so many blood tests are needed.

Hope all goes well for her.

I had to do it for 6 weeks after my c section as my risk factors were higher. So they be needed for a while.

It was most likely to be a Heparin injection. She will likely be put onto oral anticoagulants such as warfarin or rivaroxiban for around 3 months afterwards.

DeathMetalMum · 11/04/2024 07:44

Likely that it's dalterparin/fragmin or tinzaparin/innohep but different areas/heath authority's will use different brands, due to prescribing guidelines.

Generally it's short term use until controlled, however some patient’s will use the injections long term for prevention.

Meceme · 11/04/2024 08:13

I had Heparin injected in my stomach for DVT in 2023. I had 7 daily injections in outpatients then was released when the scan showed my clot had dissolved. I had caught it early so no further treatment was needed. All fine now.

rollonretirementfgs · 11/04/2024 08:20

Clexane. Blood thinner. Standard practise to avoid blood clots

lapochette · 11/04/2024 08:23

It'll be Fragmin as pps have said. I've twice had to inject myself daily in the stomach with Fragmin for 4 weeks after operations in the past.
