Sorry to hear about your DS. My friend (somewhat older) has struggled with multiple absesses (sp?) recently and I know her dentist couldn't do anything till her swelling went down - may be worth ringing tomorrow though.
She used those homeopathic teething granules that numb your mouth from Boots alongside other painkillers and found they made it a bit more manageable.
Hope your DS is feeling better soon.

Did the hopsital suggest why he had an abscess?

I would suggest you contact the dentist for xrays, as they will need to decide on a treatment for this.

Make sure he completes the course of antibiotics. But he will need some type of treament for this, asap!

Make sure he rinses his mouth with a mouthwash suitable for a child, and keep him does up on painkillers, dentists will not treat him till the swelling hasgone, he has my sympathies though, i used to suffer with these and the pain is out of this world

I've just had 2 whopping big tooth abscesses in the space of a month, the last one appeared on Good Friday and necessitated a trip to the emergency dentist. They were in different parts of my mouth and the ED couldn't tell me why I'd got them as my gums and teeth looked healthy. I got given high strength antibiotics and was told to double the dose on the first day to really start fighting the infection (though don't do this without medical advice)

With the first abscess, I went back to the dentist after completing the antibiotics to have the gum cleaned out (sounded horrific but really just washing out with a jet of water). I've been using antibac mouthwash too since last week and found that my gums appear to be much better, I just have to keep remembering to use it to try and avoid getting any more. Agree with loopylou6 - the pain is unbelieveable and definitely keep alternating the nurofen and paracetamol though the pain should start to subside once the antibiotics kick in!
