Was wondering if anyone else has had trouble with getting a kidney infection diagnosed because urine test appears to be clear? Had a really bad k infection 2 years ago and was ill for 4 weeks and lost a stone in weight, never felt so dreadful in my life!
Had cystitis 3.5 weeks ago and had 3 days of antibs and thought I was ok, but looking back been feeling really exhausted and occasionally nauseous ever since. Anyway on Thurs had what I thought was a migraine, Friday felt sick, then just as our doctor surgery closed (lunchtime Fridays) I got a familiar pain across my back. Went to A&E yesterday morning and doctor said oh it's a virus and a bit of backache .
Pain has now moved into my side and can't eat, really fed up. Remember now that initially when I had it 2 years back the gp said it was odd that my urine didn't show much. Anyone else had this? Thanks for reading.

I once had cystitis that I suspected had turned in to a kidney infection as I had VERY bad back pains. I was already on antibiotics at the time so when I called the emergency doc he just said to take some paracetamol and try to get some sleep (it was late at night). The paracetamol did help and it seemed to clear up the antibiotics I was on...If you're no longer on antibiotics I would get a second oppinion and explain what happened last time, maybe even call NHS direct for some advice?

Yes, I was in hospital for a week once with what was eventually diagnosed as a kidney infection even though my urine samples were all clear!!

I would go back to GP who will have your notes, and explain that last time it didn't show much but you have exactly the same symptoms this time, I'm sure they will take you seriously!

Thank you so much for the replies and very interested to hear that about your samples HCTG. Am going to have one more go at A&E this morning, then if no joy will go to GPs in the morning. I look after my grandson some of the week and really want to get myself sorted so as not to mess my daughter about
Thanks again

Good luck! You are so considerate..my auntie looks after my DD once a week and has a chest infection at the moment but refuses to go to the doctors, so I am stressing about childcare!!

If you're still around HCTG, been and got antibs this time, same doctor and not happy about it, but agreed my kidney felt enlarged and I have a temp. But wants me to go for tests to see if there's 'an obstruction'
Cheerful!
Hope you sort out your childcare, all very stressful

I've had clear urine samples with the dip test, and the antibiotic tablets didn't work. It was only when they got the lab culture results that they said that I had a particularly bad infection that wouldn't be resolved with the normal antibiotics. Even though by this time the cystitis had gone I still had to take the antibiotics as they were pretty concerned. HTH

I had a clear dipstick test despite massive symptoms and it turned out that i had an abscess on one of my kidneys. I ended up on IV antibiotics and a drip for a week.Turned out that the infection was stuck in my kidney and was not draining. By this time i was in absolute agony and couldn't keep anything down. The moral of the story is: keep pestering.

I have also had clear dipstick test and was told by the GP I couldn't have got an infection. Co-incidentally I was pg and had an MSU done at antenatal clinic which showed I did have an infection. The consultant I subsequently saw sighed heavily and said he couldn't believe GPs think a clear dipstick means you can't have an infection. They also tend to only give you 2 days of abs which usually aren't enough to clear it. Grrr.

Thanks for all the information, I've only had that one kidney infection 2 years ago and was definitely given the impression that it was odd that my dipstick tests were clear, so it's very interesting to read your stories, thank you for taking the time I do like to have as much info as possible when I have something, even though you have to be careful with not upsetting the GPs .
have to admit that the antibiotic I'm on, Cefalexin, does worry me a bit by saying you mustn't take it if you have a kidney problem!
