Blood in 3 year old's poo

DD told me that when she went to the toilet and was wiping herself earlier there was red on the tissue paper. I didn't think anything of it but when I went with her to the toilet later on there was very clearly blood in her poo and when I wiped her bottom. What could cause this? Should I take her to the GP?

has she eaten any sand?

LyraSilvertongue · 29/03/2008 19:32

If it was a big one, it was probably just a little tear.
I'd wait and see if it happens again. Both of my boys have had blood in their poo when it's been a really big one.

freah blood is not major OMG concern - would call NHS direct.

Did it hurt a lot? could be fissure.

LyraSilvertongue · 29/03/2008 19:35

NHS Direct will tell you to go to A&E. They always do.

No sand. Was fresh blood. Was a big one but she didn't seem to be in any pain. And it looked like the end of the poo was red as well. Not just her bottom. Sorry for TMI.

Are you absolutely certain she hasn't had tomatoes? Sorry - I am not being flippant but it is easy to be misled.

Otherwise - it would be easy to save a sample and get it tested for blood. And if you are worried I would suggest GP, unless she is in pain or has diarrhoea, in which case A&E.

DS2 did a very red poo the other day. He'd had beetroot the day before.

LaidbackinEngland · 29/03/2008 19:46

As BBB said, probably an anal fissure.

fivecandles · 29/03/2008 19:47

Definitely not tomatoes. Have had that one before. And also the tissue was red when I wiped her bottom.
