How can I tell if my DD is overweight and what can I do about it if she already eats a very healthy diet and no junk-food?

She's 4.6 yr and fairly chunky. A BMI calculator for kids that I found on the net puts her on the very border of the 'overweight' group.
She's not particularly active or sporty, can't ride a bike yet, tho she doesnt stop running about all day.
I'm afraid she's going to end up being a fat child.

Just to add that she's tall for her age and has her father's big ribcage and sturdy build. She has a layer of fat on her stomach but not really elsewhere.

I'd say keep her running about as much as possible.

DS2 is overweight and this seems to keep his weight in check. By the sounds of it you're already making sure she's eating good stuff. I try to keep the fridge clear of 'bad' stuff as much as possible. It's difficult, as DS1 is a beanpole but eats the same amount as DS2.

DS2 can't ride a bike yet either.

Perhaps we need to start a 'Bike-training support thread?'

I have just been too lazy busy to teach him.

No idea about the BMI to be honest but I've just looked at some old photos of my 2 dc when they were 3.5 and 4.6 years old and they looked sooooo chubby I couldn't believe it! It is that age though isn't it they're meant to be chubby, both mine are slim and tallish at 8 and 9 years old so don't worry too much. Don't forget how much they grow in such a short time so your dd has plenty of time to use up any 'fat' she has in excess.

Ah! She's tall. If she's inherited her father's build then there probably isn't much you can do. Chunky is different to fat.

If she doesn't have fat elsewhere I wouldn't worry too much.

Is she getting any comments from other children? I suppose she's probably too young for that to be an issue yet?

Sorry to Hijack

Bubble did you see my news here

Many Apologies

Thanks both.
I and DD2 are both skinny and DD1 does look a lot like DP at the same age. He's not fat but tends to put on weight easily...

I'm hoping she will grow out of it but know it's important to lay the groundwork for good health now. Her diet is very healthy, the most I could do would be to give her less cheese.

I'm a bit actually because I bought her a t-shirt the other day and had to go back and get a 9-10 yo size instead (she's 4.6!) as it had a silly nipped in waist design - kids are just not that shape! Luckly the normal cut t-shirts from the same shop fitted her in her size.

I want to love her chubbyness but I worry about it instead...

Thanks all, x-posted.

She isn't getting comments because they are too young for that yet and she doesnt look fat with her clothes on. Maybe her little friends are just as chubby unclothed...
