How bad is the UTI? Can you just flush it out of your system? Lots of water, lots of peeing?

Bellie · 29/03/2008 13:17

drink lots of water to flush out.
Cranberry juice too.

Have a bath and wee in it (really!)

There's a drink you can get from chemists, it's alkaline or something like that, like super-concentrated cranberry juice.
I'd get that and drink lots of water.
Good luck.

Horrible-bad luck.
This is what I would advise you:

  1. Get some Cystemme or similar from a chemist-will at least give you some relief and may even resolve the symptoms. If you can't get out, a teaspoon of bicarb soda dissolved in a pint of tepid water has the same effect to make your urine less acidic. You have to drink it BTW-a glass should be enough, and you can flavour it if you want.
  1. Call the out of hours GP-you can access this via your usual GP's surgery phone number-they may want to see you or may be happy to prescribe some ABs.
  1. Make sure you tell them you are BF but most ABs are okay in that situation.
  1. can't really help if you're prone to thrush I'm afraid!

Good luck and have a fab day on Thursday.

Cranberry juice is great, as it helps to revent the bacteria from sticking to he walls of your UT.

Lots and lots of water

Agree with had a bath and weeing in it, stay in for as long as you can, and have a shower at the end. Sounds gross but it does help with the pain and also to shift it. Drink masses of water while you are in there

Neverenough · 29/03/2008 13:20

Oops yes thanks to others-should have added drink lots of fluids but avoid acidic drinks(lemon barley etc) . Cranberry is in fact quite acidic and studies have shown that it is helpful to prevent UTIs but not to treat them.

Kaz1967 · 29/03/2008 13:23

If you add a pinch of sodium bicarb to a few drinks a day it helps change the PH of your wee and makes it less painful to pee. No matter how uncomfortable drink half a pint water OJ, cranberry every time you go to the loo will dilute everything and help flush out things.

Cranberry juice is good the tablets are more effective.

If you start to feel feverish or get pain in your back about waist hight contact your GP asap. If they prescribe antibiotics ask for something to treat the thrush you will get and you should be able to either prevent it or at least get it really quickly.

Neverenough · 29/03/2008 13:29

I'll say it again since cranberry has become an urban myth-it's good for PREVENTING UTIs but is acidic and will not help once the infection has taken hold.

Kaz1967 · 29/03/2008 14:03

The acidity actually helps prevent the bacteria multiplying but it makes it more painful.

Cranberry juice produces something called hippuric acid which prevents bacteria sticking to the walls of the bladder so can the tablets or capsules are actually far more effective.

So IF you can tolerate it it is effective for both treatment and prevention

I don't think we disagree Kaz1967 , and thank you for the references.
In my clinical experience(I am a GP) women regularly present after a week or so of symptoms having tried cranberry to no avail-and it does make urine more acidic which hurts!
I don't want to get into a tit-for-tat with you but this is what I base my current practice on.

www.bmj.com/cgi/content/full/332/7533/94?maxtoshow=&HITS=10&hits=10&RESULTFORMAT=&full text=CRANBERRY+JUICE&searchid=1&FIRSTINDE

So I think we conclude-Cranberry is great for prevention, harmless and might help but might make your symptoms worse in an active infection, and probably shouldn't be considered to be a reliable alternative to antibiotics in an established infection.
Would you agree?
Very glad you are better OP-I have had UTIs in the past-miserable.
Happy Anniversary on Thursday!

Kaz1967 · 30/03/2008 02:07

Neverenough and I bet many of those women were drinking the stuff you buy in the supermarket which contain sugar and is not effective

Over the last 5 years I have got rid of a UTI using cranberry and drinking lots and lots of water. Before Dad (who is a rare beast because he is a man who had recurrent UTI's until he discovered cranberry tablets) suggested I try taking cranberry tablets when I had the fist signs of an infection I would be on and off anti b's several times a year and only took them when I had a temp I could not handle and felt like I just wanted to die.

But then as an asthmatic and a nurse I am reluctant to take antibiotics unless I really have to because I have seen far too many multi resistant infections many of which are caused by the over use of antibiotics. I am one of those terrible patients who brings a sample (in my sterile pot) and insists on a MC&S before I will accept antibiotics

Neverenough · 30/03/2008 23:21

Not terrible Kaz1967!
Entirely appropriate course of action to wait for the MSU result.
Although also appropriate to treat empirically in someone who has had loads of confirmed UTIs and doesn't want to wait up to 4 days for a result!
I know what you mean though about not wanting to take too many ABs.

Immaculateconception · 31/03/2008 00:34

I use both the juice and the tablets and if I only have the juice in, then I drink the juice. My dr and specialist have told me to drink the juice as it does relieve it. It does work as I have had recurrant UTIs for the past 14 years and no its not because I drink cranberry juice, its because I have a problem with my kidneys.
