Adult grommet insertion

Hi there,

I'm just wondering if anyone has had grommets inserted as an adult and their experience? I've had issues with my right ear for the last 2 years after suffering from a pretty bad chest infection whilst pregnant. I eventually went private and was told I have glue ear to which grommets have been recommended. My consultant has recommended it via local anaesthetic and I'm a huge wuss so I'm panicking a bit now and hoping someone has positive experiences to tell me about it?

Thanks in advance!

I haven't had it done but just had a referral to ent due to to glue ear. Could I ask how much you're paying as the GP has said the wait list is "significant"

I had them as an adult, they helped but are only temporary so wasn't a good long term solution for me. I had them inserted via general, private hospital on Harley St, and one taken out under sedation, the other fell out naturally. Had to be careful when showering/hair washing as wasn't allowed to get water in my ears. No swimming/head under water. Lasted for about 2 years.

So luckily it is covered under my health insurance I get through work but when I checked my local private hospital, where I will be getting it done, they quoted around £2,300 on their website. Not sure if it changes on region etc?

@HawkersEast my consultant is really pushing me to do it under local but I'm hesitant! I obviously don't want to go under GA but I also don't want to be in any unnecessary discomfort either?

Thank you. Hope it goes well.

My 13 year old had it done under local anesthetic - he said it was a but uncomfortable and held my hand throughout but it really wasn't too bad. The main thing was he felt really dizzy for an hour or two after. Good luck.
