DP, 40 years old, has been diagnosed with COPD. The doctors don’t understand how it’s become so bad so quickly and have said it’s irreversible. He’s been told, if things continue as they are, he won’t live longer that 12-18 months.

Has anyone else been through a similar thing and the doctors have been wrong? Is there something that worked in particular?

I just can’t believe it.

Ive been diagnosed with Emphesma and Bronchiectasis overlap - and im in my thirties

This rang alarm bells with the docs and they ran genetic testing

They discovered I have Alpha 1 Antitrypsin deficiency - has he been tested for this? Then found out my son has it too which was beyond fukin heart breaking

Although he smoked it is still young and yes it is progressing unusually fast compared to other stories I've heard however you say he didnt know he had it 13 months ago, but he would have had it for longer, just not known about it

It is terrifying. At stage 3, i think you probably do need to get your ducks in a row if im honest. im so sorry to say that

He is doing amazing to still be working but he is doing it his own way xx

My MIL was diagnosed at around 70. She really struggled up to the point where she had a heart attack at 78. After she had a stent fitted, her COPD seemed so much better! She lived for a further 9 years, and died of a heart attack, but didn’t struggle anymore with COPD up to that point.

@Sillysausage65 💐Really sorry to hear of your diagnosis and for your son.

My DH has had it for 35 years. He's now 68.

He's getting more breathless now but still enjoys his life.

"you were diagnosed with COPD and given no advice?"

I got diagnosed with COPD after a spirometry test and was informed of the diagnosis by text message. Made a doctor's appointment which got cancelled as I was told I could only discuss it with the respiratory nurse...have never smoked and still no idea what caused it.

Given your last post it would be sensible to plan for the future by making adaptations to your house if you can. There might be a COPD team in your local health trust and there are lots of advice sites as above. If he feels well then there’s no reason why he can’t work at a desk job.
Sorry to mention it (and hopefully it won’t be necessary) but it would be sensible to ensure you have wills and other life admin like pension beneficiaries etc up to date.
